Chapter 13: The Night My Mother Died

I stared at the signature until the letters blurred.

*Margaret Vale.*

The same woman who had smiled at me during family dinners.

The same woman who had held my hand at my wedding and called me “sweetheart” in front of everyone.

The same woman who had kicked my pregnant body and told me my daughter would never belong.

She had been there the night my mother died.

“Sarah.””

Daniel’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

“She was there.””

It wasn’t a question.

It was the truth.

Jonathan looked at the document carefully.

“This is the proof Emily wanted you to find.””

My hands trembled.

“But why would Margaret be at the hospital?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was terrifying.

Evelyn slowly walked toward us.

“She was there because she knew Emily was going to expose her.””

I turned.

“You knew?””

Evelyn looked away.

“I knew Margaret was involved.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

“Sarah…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew my whole life was built on a lie, and you let me believe my mother just got sick?””

Tears filled Evelyn’s eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked at the people around me.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””

My hand moved over my stomach.

“But nobody protected me from the truth.””

The silence was painful.

Then Jonathan spoke.

“Your mother didn’t want you to grow up surrounded by revenge.””

I looked at him.

“She wanted you to have a normal life.””

I laughed softly.

“Normal?””

I looked at the cemetery.

“My mother died with a secret. Margaret spent my entire life watching me. Now my daughter is in danger.””

Jonathan lowered his head.

“You’re right.””

A moment passed.

Then Daniel stepped closer.

“We need to focus on one thing.””

I looked at him.

“Keeping our daughter safe.””

I nodded.

He was right.

My mother’s past mattered.

But my baby was still here.

Still depending on me.

We returned home that evening with the evidence.

But we weren’t prepared for what waited.

The front door was unlocked.

Daniel stopped immediately.

“I locked it.””

My heart started racing.

“Someone was here.””

He motioned for us to stay behind him.

He walked through the house slowly.

The living room was untouched.

The kitchen was untouched.

Then he stopped.

The table.

The documents.

Gone.

I felt sick.

“No.””

Jonathan rushed forward.

“The box?””

Empty.

Everything from my mother was gone.

Except one thing.

A note.

Daniel picked it up.

His face changed as he read it.

“What does it say?””

He handed it to me.

The handwriting was familiar.

Margaret’s.

*You always wanted the truth, Sarah.*

*Now you have it.*

*Come alone if you want to know what really happened to your mother.*

At the bottom was an address.

An old farmhouse outside Dallas.

My heart dropped.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“She wants me to go.””

“You’re seven months pregnant.””

“She knows that.””

Jonathan looked at the note.

“This isn’t about a meeting.””

“What is it about?””

He looked serious.

“It’s a trap.””

The room became silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Margaret.

I opened it.

And my blood turned cold.

It was a picture.

A picture of my daughter’s ultrasound.

The one only my doctor and family had seen.

May you like

Under it were four words.

*I can reach her.*
