Chapter 7: The Family Secret Margaret Protected

For a moment, nobody moved.

Margaret stood in the doorway like she owned the house.

Like she hadn’t attacked me.

Like she hadn’t spent years making me feel like a stranger.

Her eyes remained fixed on my stomach.

And that was when I understood something.

She wasn’t looking at me.

She was looking at my daughter.

Daniel stepped between us.

“Get out.””

Margaret slowly looked at him.

“After everything I’ve done for you?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You hurt my wife.””

“I was trying to protect this family.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

But it carried more anger than shouting ever could.

“You were trying to control it.””

Margaret’s face tightened.

For the first time, I saw the mask slipping.

The sweet mother.

The woman who always claimed she only wanted the best for Daniel.

It was disappearing.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Evelyn stood from the chair.

“Yes, I do.””

Margaret looked at her.

“You should have stayed away.””

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“That’s what you said twenty-eight years ago.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What happened twenty-eight years ago?””

Neither woman answered.

I felt my patience breaking.

“No more secrets.””

Everyone turned toward me.

I placed one hand over my belly.

“My entire life has been decided by people who refused to tell me the truth.””

My voice shook.

“But I am done being protected by lies.””

Margaret stared at me.

“You don’t understand what you’re asking.””

“I understand enough.””

I looked at her.

“You kicked me because of my baby.””

Her expression changed.

“You think this is about hate?””

“What else would it be?””

Margaret took a step forward.

Daniel immediately moved closer.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

Then she whispered:

“Your daughter is connected to something that should have been mine.””

The room went silent.

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret looked at Evelyn.

“She told you everything?””

“No,” Evelyn replied.

“Not yet.””

Margaret smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“That’s because she never knew the whole story.””

Daniel frowned.

“What story?””

Margaret walked toward the table.

She picked up the old photograph.

“You want the truth?””

She looked at me.

“Fine.””

I held my breath.

“Your mother and I were not just friends.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Margaret placed the photo down.

“We were family.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked confused.

“How?””

Margaret’s eyes moved to him.

“Because before I married your father, I knew Sarah’s mother.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You’re leaving out the important part.””

Margaret ignored her.

“Emily had something I wanted.””

“What?””

Margaret looked at me.

“You.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

She continued.

“Your mother was supposed to give me a child.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“She’s saying she tried to take Sarah away.””

Margaret’s eyes flashed.

“Because Emily was weak.””

“No,” Evelyn said.

“Because Emily was brave enough to stop you.””

Margaret slammed her hand against the table.

“You don’t know anything!””

The sudden movement made me flinch.

Daniel noticed.

His expression became colder.

“Leave.””

Margaret looked at him.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

He pointed toward the door.

“You’re leaving now.””

For several seconds, she stared at him.

Then she laughed quietly.

“You really think this ends with me walking away?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Margaret looked at me one last time.

“You think you’re protecting your daughter.””

She moved toward the door.

“But you don’t even know what she is.””

The door closed behind her.

Nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“She’s getting desperate.””

I looked at her.

“What does she mean by what my daughter is?””

Evelyn looked terrified.

“She believes your baby is the last piece of a promise your mother made.””

“What promise?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“The promise that would reveal why Margaret destroyed Emily’s life.””

Before I could ask another question, Daniel’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

Because the name on the screen was enough.

*Margaret.*

But this time, she wasn’t calling.

She was sending a video.
