Chapter 8: The Video Margaret Wanted Us to See
Daniel didn’t press play immediately.
The three of us stood around the phone.
Watching.
Waiting.
The message had only one sentence.
*You deserve to know what your mother was hiding.*
My chest tightened.
“Play it.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
I nodded.
“I need to know.””
He pressed the screen.
The video began.
At first, it showed an old room.
A bedroom.
The quality was poor.
The colors were faded.
Then a woman appeared.
My mother.
I stopped breathing.
I hadn’t seen her face in years.
Not in a memory.
Not in a photograph.
Moving.
Alive.
My hand covered my mouth.
“Mom…”
Daniel immediately held my shoulder.
The video continued.
My mother was sitting on a chair.
She looked younger than I remembered.
But her eyes were tired.
She was speaking to someone off-camera.
“I know what you want, Margaret.””
My entire body froze.
Margaret’s voice answered.
“You don’t understand what this means.””
My mother shook her head.
“No. I understand exactly.””
The camera moved slightly.
Then Margaret appeared.
Younger.
But still the same.
The same cold expression.
The same confidence.
“I deserve a family too.””
My mother looked hurt.
“You had one.””
“No.””
Margaret stepped closer.
“I had Daniel’s father. I had a name. I had a house.””
Her voice became bitter.
“But I never had what you had.””
My mother looked down.
“What are you talking about?””
Margaret whispered:
“A child who loved you.””
I felt tears forming.
My mother reached toward her.
“Margaret, this is not the answer.””
“You don’t get to decide that.””
The video shook.
Then my mother said something that made my blood run cold.
“Sarah is not a replacement for the child you lost.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Evelyn.
She looked away.
Daniel whispered:
“What child?””
The video continued.
Margaret’s voice became louder.
“You promised you would help me.””
“I promised to help you heal.””
“Same thing.””
“No.””
My mother stood.
“You became obsessed.””
Margaret’s face changed.
“You took everything from me.””
“I never took anything.””
“You took the life I was supposed to have.””
The screen suddenly went black.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I felt numb.
A child.
Margaret lost a child.
And somehow, she connected that loss to me.
To my daughter.
Evelyn finally spoke.
“Now you understand.””
I looked at her.
“Understand what?””
“Why Margaret became obsessed with your baby.””
Daniel looked angry.
“She thinks Sarah’s daughter belongs to her because of some old grief?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“It’s more complicated.””
“How?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Because Margaret didn’t just lose a child.””
She paused.
“She was told she would never have another.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with me?””
Evelyn’s face became serious.
“Because your mother made a decision before she died.””
“What decision?””
Evelyn took a deep breath.
“She left something behind for your daughter.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
“A legal document.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What kind of document?””
Evelyn stared at me.
“One that proves Margaret was never supposed to have control over your family.””
My heart raced.
“Where is it?””
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“I don’t know.””
“Then why are you telling me?””
Her expression changed.
“Because Margaret knows where it is.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
We all froze.
Daniel walked toward the window.
Then stopped.
“Sarah.””
His voice was different.
“What?””
He looked outside.
“Margaret isn’t leaving.””
I stood slowly.
“What do you mean?””
May you like
Daniel turned back.
“She brought someone.””
