Chapter 11: The Document That Could Destroy Everything

We didn’t let Margaret inside.

Not that night.

Not after everything.

Daniel locked the door and closed the curtains.

For the first time since this nightmare began, we were all on the same side.

But the fear remained.

Because now we knew Margaret wasn’t acting out of anger.

She had a plan.

Jonathan placed the document on the table.

“This is only a copy.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Where is the original?””

Jonathan shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Your mother hid it.””

I touched the paper carefully.

“Why would she create something like this?””

Jonathan answered.

“Because she knew Margaret would try to control your future.””

I looked at him.

“My future?””

“Yes.””

He opened the document.

The first page contained legal language.

But one sentence caught my attention.

*The inheritance shall remain protected until Sarah’s first child is born.*

I looked up.

“My first child.””

Jonathan nodded.

“That is why Margaret became interested when she heard you were pregnant.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She knew.””

Evelyn looked down.

“She always knew.””

I turned toward her.

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn sighed.

“Margaret kept track of you.””

A chill went through me.

“For twenty-eight years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Jonathan answered.

“Because she believed the trust belonged to her.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s insane.””

“It is.””

Jonathan looked at the document.

“But Margaret has never cared about what was right.””

A notification suddenly appeared on Daniel’s phone.

He looked at it.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He handed me the phone.

It was a news article.

A picture of our house.

The headline made my stomach drop.

*LOCAL WOMAN CLAIMS DAUGHTER-IN-LAW ATTACKED HER DURING FAMILY DISPUTE*

I stared.

“She went public?””

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

“She’s trying to control the story.””

Evelyn looked worried.

“She always does that.””

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Margaret survives by making people believe she is the victim.””

I remembered every family gathering.

Every conversation where I felt like the outsider.

Every time Margaret smiled while making me look unreasonable.

She had been preparing this for years.

“She’s going to say I attacked her.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

My phone started ringing.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A reporter’s voice came through.

“Is this Sarah Miller?””

My heart sank.

“Yes.””

“We received information that there was an incident involving you and your mother-in-law.””

I looked at Daniel.

The reporter continued.

“Mrs. Margaret Vale claims you became violent because you were angry about family inheritance.””

I froze.

Family inheritance.

She had already started.

“Who told you that?””

The reporter hesitated.

“Mrs. Vale provided documents.””

My blood ran cold.

“What documents?””

“She says they prove your mother left everything to her.””

I looked at Jonathan.

His face became serious.

“That’s impossible.””

The reporter continued.

“Mrs. Miller, is it true that your mother and Margaret Vale had a dispute before your mother’s death?””

I ended the call.

My hands shook.

“She has the documents.””

Jonathan stared at the table.

“No.””

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“She found the original.””

Daniel stood.

“Then where is it?””

Jonathan looked at me.

“Somewhere she knows you will never look.””

I frowned.

“Where?””

May you like

He took a slow breath.

“Your mother’s grave.””
