Chapter 2: The Recording She Never Expected
The hospital lights were too bright.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Everything looked unreal.
The white walls.
The quiet footsteps.
The sound of machines beeping behind closed doors.
Daniel sat beside me while the doctor checked the baby.
His hand never left mine.
“Your daughter’s heartbeat is strong,” the doctor finally said.
I closed my eyes.
Relief washed over me so quickly that I almost cried.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
The doctor looked serious.
“But I want you to rest. A fall at seven months pregnant is something we take seriously.””
Daniel nodded immediately.
“We’ll do whatever you say.””
The doctor left.
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Daniel said quietly, “I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
He stared at our hands.
“For not seeing it.””
The pain in his voice surprised me.
“I should have known something was wrong.””
I swallowed.
“You loved your mother.””
“I do.””
He paused.
“But that doesn’t mean I should have ignored you.””
For years, I had wanted those words.
But hearing them after everything happened felt different.
Because sometimes an apology arrives after the damage is already done.
“I tried to tell you,” I whispered.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice became stronger.
“Every time she insulted me, I told myself maybe I was overreacting. Every time she made me feel like a stranger, I told myself she was just protective.””
I looked at him.
“But today she hurt our baby.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“I know.””
A nurse entered with my phone in a plastic bag.
“Your husband said this was found under the table at your house.””
Daniel took it.
The screen was shattered.
But the phone still worked.
He looked at me.
“Do you want me to replace it?””
I stared at the device.
“No.””
Something inside me told me not to.
“Can you check something?””
“What?””
“Before she kicked me… I think it was recording.””
Daniel frowned.
He unlocked the phone.
The recording app was open.
The file was still there.
His thumb hovered over it.
“Sarah…”
“I need to know if I imagined it.””
He pressed play.
At first, there was only the sound of movement.
Then Margaret’s voice filled the hospital room.
“You think carrying Daniel’s baby gives you power?””
Daniel froze.
I watched his face change.
The recording continued.
My own voice.
“Leave my house.””
Then Margaret.
“Don’t turn your back on me.””
A chair scraping.
My phone hitting the floor.
Then silence.
A few seconds later…
The sound of the kick.
My breath leaving my body.
Daniel stopped the recording.
His face had gone pale.
“She lied.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew.
He knew.
There was no misunderstanding anymore.
No excuse.
No explanation.
Only the truth.
Daniel stood up.
“I’m going back.””
I grabbed his wrist.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“What if she gets angry?””
His expression changed.
Not into anger.
Into something stronger.
Determination.
“She already hurt my wife and my daughter.””
He gently kissed my forehead.
“I’m not letting her hurt you again.””
Two hours later, Daniel returned home.
I stayed at the hospital under observation.
But before he left, he made one promise.
“I’ll handle this.””
I believed him.
Until my phone rang.
The call came from an unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice whispered.
“Sarah, don’t trust Daniel.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“I know what Margaret did.””
I sat up slowly.
“Who is this?””
There was a long pause.
Then she said:
May you like
“I’m the reason Margaret thought she could get away with it.””
And before I could ask what she meant, the call disconnected.
