Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew My Mother
I couldn’t move.
The words replayed in my mind.
*She died trying to protect you from Margaret.*
For years, I had believed my mother simply got sick.
That was the story everyone told me.
The doctors.
The relatives.
Even Margaret.
But now a stranger was standing at my front door telling me everything I knew was a lie.
“Come inside,” Daniel said.
His voice was calm, but his expression wasn’t.
He looked ready for a fight.
Evelyn stepped into the house slowly.
She kept looking around.
Like she expected someone else to appear.
“Are you afraid of Margaret?”” I asked.
Her eyes lowered.
“I’m afraid of what she’s willing to do.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Daniel closed the door.
“Start from the beginning.””
Evelyn nodded.
She sat at the dining table.
The same table where Margaret had attacked me.
The irony wasn’t lost on me.
“Your mother’s name was Emily.””
I sat across from her.
“I know.””
“No,” Evelyn said gently.
“You know her name. You don’t know her story.””
She reached into her purse and pulled out another photograph.
This one was older.
It showed my mother standing beside a younger Margaret.
My heart dropped.
“They knew each other?””
Evelyn nodded.
“They were friends once.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
Evelyn stared at the photograph.
“Before Margaret became the woman you know today, she was different.””
I almost laughed.
“People don’t change that much.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“You’re right.””
She placed the photo down.
“Some people just become better at hiding who they are.””
The room went quiet.
“Your mother and Margaret were close,” Evelyn continued.
“They trusted each other. Until the night everything changed.””
“What happened?””
Evelyn looked at my stomach.
Then at me.
“Your mother discovered Margaret had been lying to everyone.””
“About what?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“She had been hiding a secret about Daniel’s family.””
Daniel frowned.
“My family?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She knew things about your father that even you didn’t know.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“My father died when I was twelve.””
“Yes.””
Evelyn folded her hands.
“And Margaret made sure certain information disappeared.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“Why?””
“Because if the truth came out, Margaret would lose everything.””
Daniel stood.
“What truth?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“The truth about how she built her family.””
A silence filled the room.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
He checked it.
His face immediately changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
He turned the screen toward me.
It was a message from Margaret.
*You brought Evelyn into this?*
My stomach tightened.
Daniel looked confused.
“How does she know?””
Another message appeared.
*You should have left the past buried.*
Then another.
*Ask Sarah why her mother never told her who her real father was.*
The room went silent.
I stared at the screen.
“What did she mean?””
Nobody answered.
Evelyn looked devastated.
Daniel looked angry.
And I felt like the entire foundation of my life had cracked open.
“My real father?””
My voice trembled.
“My father is dead.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Sarah.””
“For what?””
She took a deep breath.
“Because your mother spent her entire life protecting you from the truth.””
I stood up.
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“No, I want the truth.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
She reached into her purse again.
This time, she pulled out a small envelope.
The paper looked old.
Almost damaged by time.
“This was your mother’s final letter.””
I froze.
“My mother wrote this?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She told me never to give it to you.””
“Then why are you giving it to me now?””
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“Because Margaret has already crossed the line.””
My hands shook as I took the envelope.
There was one name written on it.
Not mine.
Not my mother’s.
A name I had never seen before.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Who is that?””
I stared at the handwriting.
May you like
And then Evelyn whispered:
“That is the name of the man who was supposed to raise you.””
