Chapter 10: The Man Who Witnessed My Mother’s Final Night

Nobody moved.

Not Daniel.

Not Evelyn.

Not even me.

The words hung in the air like a warning.

*I was there.*

My hand slowly moved to my stomach.

My daughter kicked softly.

Almost like she knew I needed something to hold onto.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“You need to leave.””

Jonathan’s voice came through the door.

“I understand why you don’t trust me.””

“You don’t understand anything.””

Daniel’s anger was controlled, but I could hear the pain beneath it.

“My wife almost lost our daughter because of your family.””

There was silence.

Then Jonathan replied:

“I know.””

That answer made Daniel pause.

“How?””

Another silence.

Then Jonathan said:

“Because Margaret told me.””

My heart sank.

“She told you?””

Evelyn whispered:

“No…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“She’s using him.””

The knocking stopped.

Then Jonathan spoke again.

“Sarah, your mother trusted me with something before she died.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“My mother trusted you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you disappear?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

For years, I had wondered why there were so many empty spaces in my childhood.

Why certain names disappeared.

Why everyone avoided talking about the past.

Jonathan didn’t answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice sounded broken.

“Because I was afraid.””

Daniel opened the door slightly.

Not enough for Jonathan to enter.

“Afraid of what?””

Jonathan looked at him.

“Margaret.””

The name alone seemed to change the atmosphere.

Jonathan continued.

“She had power. Money. Connections. And after what happened, she made sure everyone who knew the truth stayed quiet.””

Daniel frowned.

“What happened?””

Jonathan looked directly at me.

“Your mother discovered Margaret had been planning to take you away.””

My breathing stopped.

Again.

The same nightmare.

Everyone wanted to take something from me.

My childhood.

My family.

Now my daughter.

“Why?””

Jonathan lowered his eyes.

“Because Margaret believed Emily had stolen her chance to be a mother.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Jonathan nodded sadly.

“It didn’t make sense to Emily either.””

He looked toward Evelyn.

“Until we found out about the agreement.””

“What agreement?””

Jonathan reached into his coat.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Daniel immediately moved closer.

“What is that?””

“The reason Margaret has been searching for Sarah’s daughter.””

I stared at the document.

“Why?””

Jonathan looked at me.

“Because your mother created a trust.””

Evelyn whispered:

“For the child.””

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart raced.

“What kind of trust?””

“A trust that could only be accessed by Sarah’s first child.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at my stomach.

“My daughter?””

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt dizzy.

“So Margaret wants access to it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Jonathan’s face became serious.

“Because the trust contains evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

He looked toward Margaret.

Who was still standing outside.

“Evidence that Margaret destroyed Emily’s life.””

The door suddenly shook.

Margaret had pushed against it.

“Stop lying!””

Everyone turned.

Her face was no longer calm.

The perfect mask was gone.

“You don’t know what you’re saying!””

Jonathan looked at her.

“I know exactly what I’m saying.””

Margaret’s eyes became cold.

“You think you’re the hero?””

“No.””

Jonathan’s voice was quiet.

“I think Emily was.””

That name seemed to hurt her.

Margaret stepped back.

For a second, she looked older.

Tired.

Then the anger returned.

“Sarah.””

I looked at her.

“You really think these people care about you?””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“They abandoned you once.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But Margaret kept going.

“Ask Jonathan why he left.””

Jonathan looked away.

And that tiny movement told me something.

There was more.

“Why did you leave?”” I asked.

Everyone became silent.

Jonathan looked at me.

And finally said:

“Because your mother asked me to.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She knew Margaret would come after me.””

He swallowed.

“She knew Margaret would use me to find you.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“She sacrificed everything.””

I looked at the man standing outside.

The stranger connected to my past.

The man my mother trusted.

“Why come back now?””

Jonathan looked at my daughter.

Then at me.

“Because Margaret found you.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“And because…”

May you like

He hesitated.

“Because she is planning something bigger than taking your baby.””
