Chapter 14: The Last Lie Margaret Told
Daniel wanted to call the police.
Immediately.
And for the first time, I didn’t argue.
Because this was no longer just about the past.
Margaret had crossed a line.
A line that could never be uncrossed.
The police arrived within the hour.
They collected the note.
The message.
The evidence.
But the problem remained.
Margaret was careful.
She had spent years building a perfect image.
A respected woman.
A loving mother.
A grieving friend.
There was no simple way to prove what she had done.
“She’s been planning this for decades,” Jonathan said quietly.
We sat in the living room while officers searched the house.
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew her.””
Jonathan nodded.
“I did.””
“Then tell us everything.””
Jonathan was silent.
For several seconds, I thought he wouldn’t answer.
Then he finally spoke.
“Margaret lost a child before she met your mother.””
I looked at him.
“She told Emily she could never have another.””
Jonathan continued.
“She became obsessed with the idea that Emily had the life she deserved.””
Evelyn added quietly:
“She didn’t want Sarah because she loved her.””
I swallowed.
“She wanted me because I represented what she lost.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Yes.””
The room felt heavy.
Then Daniel asked:
“What happened the night Emily died?””
Jonathan looked down.
“I arrived at the hospital after Margaret left.””
“Why?””
“Because Emily called me.””
My heart stopped.
“She called you?””
“Yes.””
Jonathan’s voice became softer.
“She said Margaret knew about the documents.””
“And?””
“She said Margaret threatened her.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“What did she say?””
Jonathan looked at me.
“She said, ‘If Sarah ever has a daughter, Margaret will try to take her.’”
My hand immediately went to my stomach.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
My mother knew.
Twenty-eight years ago.
She knew this day might come.
A police officer walked in.
“Mrs. Miller?””
I stood.
“Yes?””
“We found something.””
He handed Daniel a small evidence bag.
Inside was a flash drive.
My name was written on it.
My heart stopped.
“Where did you find it?””
“In your mother’s old storage box.””
The officer looked confused.
“We believe someone removed it recently and placed it back.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Margaret.””
We connected the flash drive to the computer.
One file appeared.
*For Sarah.*
I clicked it.
The screen showed my mother.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
I couldn’t breathe.
“Sarah…”
Her voice filled the room.
“If you’re watching this, then Margaret found you.””
I covered my mouth.
My mother continued.
“I wanted to tell you the truth myself.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“But I was afraid.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“Not for me.””
A pause.
“For you.””
The video continued.
“Margaret believes she lost everything because of me.””
My mother shook her head.
“But the truth is, she lost everything because of the choices she made.””
Then she said something that made all of us freeze.
“Sarah, there is one thing Margaret never knew.””
I leaned closer.
“She never knew who your father really was.””
The room went silent.
Jonathan looked shocked.
“What?””
My mother continued.
“And that is why she has spent her entire life trying to find you.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Your father…”
I looked at Jonathan.
“What did my mother mean?””
Jonathan stared at the blank screen.
And slowly said:
“Sarah…”
May you like
His voice shook.
“Your father is still alive.””
