Chapter 12: What Was Buried With My Mother
The cemetery was quiet.
Too quiet.
I stood beside my mother’s grave with Daniel holding my hand.
The wind moved through the trees.
For years, I had avoided this place.
Not because I didn’t love my mother.
Because losing her was still a wound I never learned how to close.
But now I was standing here because she had left me one final secret.
A secret Margaret wanted.
Jonathan stood a few feet away.
Evelyn stayed near the car.
“I’m sorry,” Daniel whispered.
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For making you face all of this.””
I squeezed his hand.
“We face it together.””
He smiled sadly.
“You sound like your mother.””
That sentence almost broke me.
I looked at the headstone.
“Tell me what to do.””
Jonathan stepped forward.
“Your mother left a message.””
“A message?””
He nodded.
“She knew someone might find the documents before you.””
I looked confused.
“How?””
“She planned for everything.””
Jonathan reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small key.
My heart stopped.
“Where did you get that?””
“Emily gave it to me.””
Daniel looked at the key.
“What does it open?””
Jonathan looked at the grave.
“The box.””
I stared.
“What box?””
“The one buried beneath the stone.””
My breath caught.
Daniel looked shocked.
“Are you serious?””
Jonathan nodded.
“Emily knew Margaret would search her house. Her belongings. Her records.””
He looked at me.
“But she never thought Margaret would disturb her grave.””
I felt sick.
Because Margaret had already crossed so many lines.
Why would this surprise me?
Jonathan knelt beside the grave.
Carefully, he moved a small stone hidden near the base.
There was a tiny metal box underneath.
My hands covered my mouth.
“She really planned this.””
Jonathan handed me the box.
The key fit perfectly.
Inside were several things.
A necklace.
A letter.
And a sealed envelope.
My name was written on it.
I opened the letter first.
*Sarah,*
*If you are reading this, then Margaret has found you.*
My eyes filled with tears.
*I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you forever.*
I paused.
Daniel wrapped an arm around me.
I continued.
*But I need you to know something. Margaret’s greatest fear is not losing money. It is losing the truth.*
I looked at Jonathan.
The letter continued.
*The person who can destroy Margaret’s lies is not me. It is you.*
I frowned.
Me?
The final lines made my heart race.
*Because you are the only person alive who can prove what happened the night I died.*
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“What does that mean?””
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
It made no sense.
I was a child.
I couldn’t prove anything.
Unless…
My eyes moved to the sealed envelope.
Inside was a small piece of paper.
A hospital record.
My hands began shaking.
Jonathan looked over my shoulder.
Then his face changed.
“What is it?””
I couldn’t speak.
Daniel took the paper.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then he whispered:
“Sarah…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
He slowly looked up.
“The night your mother died…”
A pause.
“She wasn’t alone.””
My heart pounded.
“Who was with her?””
Daniel turned the paper toward me.
At the bottom was a signature.
A name.
One I recognized.
May you like
Because I had just heard it.
*Margaret Vale.*
