Chapter 9: Claire’s Last Warning
The envelope felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.
I knew Claire’s handwriting.
I knew every curve of every letter.
She wrote the same way she lived.
Carefully.
Honestly.
With love hidden in every detail.
But this letter was different.
The words were rushed.
Written by someone who knew time was running out.
I opened it.
“Ethan,
If you are reading this, then I was right.””
My throat tightened.
“I was not afraid of dying.””
I stopped.
The room blurred.
“I was afraid of leaving our daughters in the hands of people who wanted them to forget me.””
Behind me, nobody spoke.
Not Vanessa.
Not Grant.
Nobody.
Claire continued:
“I discovered that someone was creating a story about me before I was even gone.””
My hands shook.
“They wanted everyone to believe I was weak. Unstable. Unable to care for my children.””
I looked at the walls.
The photographs.
The surveillance.
“They needed a reason for people to question me.””
A tear fell onto the page.
“Because the truth was dangerous.””
I looked up.
“Dangerous how?””
No one answered.
I turned toward Grant.
“You knew about this room.””
His silence was enough.
“You knew Claire was investigating.””
Still nothing.
I stepped closer.
“You were watching her.””
Grant finally spoke.
“She was digging into things she didn’t understand.””
I laughed.
“No. She understood perfectly.””
I held up the letter.
“She understood that her own family was destroying her.””
Grant’s face hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
Again.
Always silence.
Claire’s letter continued.
“I found the original company records.””
My eyes moved faster.
“She discovered that the money being taken from Ethan’s company was not random.””
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slowly.
“Someone was moving money through accounts connected to our family.””
The next sentence made my stomach drop.
“And the person signing the final approvals was someone Ethan trusted completely.””
My eyes lifted.
Grant.
The room became painfully quiet.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“You don’t understand.””
I turned.
“No?””
She looked broken.
Not angry.
Broken.
“I didn’t want this.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did you do it?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Grant promised me everything would be fixed.””
There it was.
The first crack.
The truth finally coming out.
“What did he promise?””
Vanessa looked at Grant.
And Grant’s expression changed.
A warning.
A threat.
But she continued.
“He said after Claire was gone, Ethan would be too distracted to run the company.””
My chest tightened.
“He said the girls would be easier to control if they stopped trusting their mother.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She cried quietly.
“I thought he was only trying to protect the company.””
I stepped closer.
“And my daughters?””
Her voice broke.
“I didn’t think it would go that far.””
That sentence hurt more than an apology.
Because it meant she knew enough to stop it.
And didn’t.
Then the lights suddenly went out.
The mansion disappeared into darkness.
Someone screamed.
A crash echoed from upstairs.
My daughters.
I ran.
When I reached their room, the door was open.
The bed was empty.
All four blankets were on the floor.
My voice broke.
“No.””
I searched the room.
“Emma?””
“Lily?””
“Harper?””
“Chloe?””
Nothing.
Then I saw something on the pillow.
A small piece of paper.
Claire’s handwriting.
But this time, the message wasn’t for me.
It was for my daughters.
Four words.
“Find the hidden truth.””
And underneath it was another sentence.
One that made my blood run cold.
“Your mother didn’t leave you.””
May you like
A pause.
“She was taken from you.””
