Chapter 5: The Documents Behind the Wall

I didn’t wait.

I ran upstairs.

Behind me, I heard Vanessa shout my name.

“Ethan, stop!””

I ignored her.

My daughters were sleeping.

That was the only thing that mattered.

I entered their room slowly.

The Christmas lights outside painted soft colors across their faces.

For a moment, everything was peaceful.

Then I noticed the closet.

The door was slightly open.

I knew I had closed it earlier.

I walked toward it.

Inside were their clothes.

A few toys.

And a small wooden box hidden behind blankets.

I pulled it out.

It was locked.

Vanessa appeared at the doorway.

“Don’t.””

I looked back.

“You really need to stop saying that.””

She stepped inside.

“Some things are private.””

“Not when they involve my children.””

She looked at the box.

Then at me.

For the first time, she looked defeated.

“You don’t understand what Claire was like.””

I stopped.

“What did you just say?””

“She was sick.””

“She was dying.””

“She wasn’t herself.””

I stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to understand that she made mistakes.””

I opened the drawer beside the bed.

Found a hairpin.

And forced the lock.

Inside were papers.

Lots of them.

Medical records.

Legal documents.

Bank statements.

And a folder with my daughters’ names.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The first page was a custody agreement.

The second page was a psychological evaluation.

I read the name at the top.

Dr. Samuel Pierce.

My stomach dropped.

I knew him.

He was a family counselor Vanessa hired after Claire died.

The report said:

“Children displaying signs of emotional confusion due to maternal abandonment.””

Maternal abandonment.

A lie.

A carefully written lie.

I turned another page.

“Recommended guardianship adjustment if father remains frequently absent.””

My blood went cold.

They weren’t just hurting my daughters.

They were building a case against me.

Vanessa watched me read.

“You weren’t there.””

The words came quietly.

I looked up.

“What?””

“You weren’t there when Claire got sick. You weren’t there when everything fell apart.””

“I was working because Claire asked me to.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You chose work.””

I stepped closer.

“And you chose to destroy children.””

Her eyes hardened.

“You think you’re better than me?””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

“Because I never made four innocent girls believe their mother hated them.””

Her face changed.

Anger.

Pure anger.

Then something unexpected happened.

She smiled.

Not kindly.

Not sadly.

Confidently.

“You still don’t get it.””

“What?””

“This was never about the girls.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

Toward someone standing outside.

Richard.

He looked terrified.

Vanessa continued.

“You think I wanted your daughters to hate Claire?””

“Then why?””

She stepped closer.

“Because Claire left something behind.””

I tightened my grip on the documents.

“What?””

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“A recording.””

I stared at her.

“You already knew about the recording.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you destroy it?””

Her silence answered.

She couldn’t.

Because Claire had hidden it too well.

I looked down at the tablet.

Then back at Vanessa.

“What was on it?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she whispered:

“Something that could ruin everyone in this house.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke immediately.

“Ethan, if you want to know why Claire was really afraid…”

I froze.

The voice continued.

“Come to the old guest house alone.””

I looked toward the window.

The guest house sat at the edge of the property.

Abandoned for years.

Then the man whispered:

“And bring the tablet.””

The call ended.

I turned around.

Vanessa was gone.

But on the floor where she had been standing was a single photograph.

A picture of Claire.

Taken the week before she died.

May you like

And written on the back were five words:

“She knew about the money.””
