Chapter 8: The Room That Was Never Supposed to Exist
I ran.
I didn’t remember leaving the guest house.
I didn’t remember crossing the snow-covered yard.
All I remembered was one thought.
My daughters.
Someone had been inside their room.
Someone had taken a picture.
By the time I reached the mansion, my heart was pounding.
The Christmas party was still alive.
Music.
Laughter.
People pretending the world was normal.
I pushed through the crowd.
“Where are my daughters?””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa was standing near the staircase.
Her face went pale.
“They’re sleeping.””
I walked straight toward her.
“Who was upstairs?””
Nobody answered.
Grant appeared from the hallway.
“Ethan.””
I stopped.
The man who had been hiding behind kindness for years.
The man who had helped destroy my family.
“You.””
His expression hardened.
“What?””
“You were with Claire.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa looked at him.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
Grant’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“How did you know that?””
I held up the tablet.
“You should have asked yourself why Claire recorded everything.””
A few guests stepped away.
They finally understood.
This wasn’t a family argument.
This was something darker.
Grant looked around.
“Ethan, you’re making a mistake.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I made a mistake when I trusted you.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Stop pretending you’re the victim.””
I turned toward her.
The anger inside me burned.
“My daughters ate moldy bread.””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
“You taught them their mother abandoned them.””
“That wasn’t my idea.””
The words slipped out.
Everyone heard.
Vanessa realized too late.
She covered her mouth.
I stared at her.
“What did you say?””
She looked at Grant.
Just for a second.
But that was enough.
Grant grabbed her arm.
“Enough.””
I moved between them.
“Don’t touch her.””
The irony almost made me laugh.
After everything.
I was protecting Vanessa from him.
Because suddenly I understood.
She wasn’t innocent.
But she wasn’t the whole story.
Grant looked at me.
“You have no idea what Claire did.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
He smiled.
A cold smile.
“She was going to destroy everything.””
“What everything?””
“Our family.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She was protecting it.””
Grant’s eyes narrowed.
Then something strange happened.
My oldest daughter, Lily, appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Daddy?””
Everyone froze.
I ran toward her.
“What are you doing awake?””
She looked confused.
“I heard Mommy.””
My blood stopped.
“What?””
She pointed toward the hallway.
“She was calling me.””
Every person in the room went silent.
Because Claire was dead.
I knelt down.
“Sweetheart, what did you hear?””
Lily looked toward the dark hallway.
“She said she left something for us.””
Vanessa went completely still.
“What did she say?””
Lily looked at her.
“Aunt Vanessa told me never to go in that room.””
My eyes moved.
“What room?””
Lily pointed.
The end of the hallway.
A door I had never noticed before.
A door hidden behind a painting.
Richard whispered:
“No.””
Grant looked terrified.
For the first time all night.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Terrified.
I walked toward the hidden door.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Ethan, please.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
I opened it.
Inside was a small room.
A room nobody had told me existed.
The walls were covered with photographs.
My daughters.
Claire.
Me.
But not happy photographs.
Security photos.
Taken from inside the house.
Dates.
Times.
Notes.
My breathing became shallow.
Someone had been monitoring us.
For months.
On the desk sat a single envelope.
My name was written on it.
Claire’s handwriting.
I picked it up.
The first line said:
“Ethan, if you found this room, then they know I discovered the truth.””
Behind me, someone whispered:
“She was never supposed to find that.””
I turned.
Grant was standing in the doorway.
And for the first time…
May you like
he looked afraid of Claire.
Even though she was gone.
