Chapter 12: The Video Claire Hid Until The End
Victor reached for the controls.
I grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.””
His eyes met mine.
“Ethan.””
“No.””
My voice was low.
“You have spent months controlling what people see.””
I tightened my grip.
“Not anymore.””
Daniel moved beside me.
“Where is the video?””
Victor looked away.
That was enough.
He knew.
I pushed him back.
“Where?””
He said nothing.
Then Lily’s voice came through the speaker again.
“Daddy?””
I turned toward the monitor.
“Lily, sweetheart, where are you?””
She pointed at something beside her.
“A box.””
My heart raced.
“What kind of box?””
“The one Mommy told us not to open until you came home.””
Everyone froze.
Claire had prepared for this.
She knew.
She knew something would happen.
She knew she might not be there.
And she trusted our daughters to protect the truth.
I looked at Victor.
“Unlock the room.””
He didn’t move.
I stepped closer.
“Now.””
His expression hardened.
“You think opening that box fixes everything?””
“No.””
I looked at the screen.
“But it tells me who broke it.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Victor slowly entered a code.
The storage room door unlocked.
A minute later, Daniel brought the box.
It was small.
Old.
Covered in scratches.
Inside was another tablet.
And a letter.
Claire’s handwriting.
I opened it.
“Ethan,
If you found this, then you finally know what I knew.””
My hands trembled.
“I didn’t record this because I wanted revenge.””
A pause.
“I recorded it because I wanted our daughters to grow up knowing the truth.””
I turned on the tablet.
The video began.
Claire appeared.
But this time, she wasn’t afraid.
She looked calm.
Strong.
“Ethan.””
She smiled.
“If you are watching this, I need you to forgive yourself.””
My eyes burned.
“I know you blame yourself.””
She looked down.
“But this was never because you loved work more than us.””
A tear fell.
“It was because people around us made sure you believed everything was fine.””
I looked at Victor.
Then the door.
Then the screens.
Claire continued.
“The person who hurt me most was not the person who betrayed me.””
Everyone went still.
“It was the person who convinced me they were protecting me.””
The video paused.
Then Claire said:
“Victor knows the truth.””
Victor stepped back.
No.
Not again.
Another betrayal.
Claire continued.
“He knows what Grant and Vanessa planned.””
Victor closed his eyes.
“But he stayed silent.””
The room felt suffocating.
“You didn’t hurt me directly, Victor.””
Claire’s voice became softer.
“But silence can be a weapon.””
Victor looked away.
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
He didn’t answer.
“You knew everything.””
Finally, he whispered:
“Yes.””
The answer broke something inside me.
“Why?””
Victor looked at the monitor showing my daughters.
“Because I was trying to protect someone.””
“Who?””
He looked toward the mansion.
Toward the ballroom.
Toward the people still waiting upstairs.
Then he said:
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“My mother died years ago.””
Victor shook his head.
“No.””
The room went silent.
“She didn’t die.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Victor opened another file.
A photograph appeared.
An old photograph.
My mother.
Alive.
Standing beside someone I knew.
Someone who had been in this house tonight.
Victor whispered:
“Your mother has been hiding for years.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Victor looked at me.
“Because she discovered the original secret your father buried.””
A pause.
“And Claire found out before she died.””
The screen went black.
Then a final message appeared.
May you like
One sentence.
“The person who knows why your mother disappeared is already inside the mansion.””
