Chapter 4: The Guest Who Knew Too Much

The voice behind me was trembling.

“Ethan… don’t play that recording.””

I slowly turned around.

And the person standing there was the last person I expected.

My uncle, Richard.

The man who had attended every birthday party my daughters ever had.

The man who had carried them on his shoulders when they were babies.

The man who hugged me when Claire died and told me, “Family is all you have left.””

Now he stood in the middle of my Christmas ballroom, surrounded by people wearing expensive suits and smiling faces, looking like a man who had just watched his own secret walk into the light.

I held up the tablet.

“Why?””

Richard swallowed.

“Because you don’t understand what you’re seeing.””

I stared at him.

“Then explain.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

Around us, whispers spread through the room.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

The fear on her face had changed.

She wasn’t afraid of me anymore.

She was afraid of what Richard might say.

I noticed.

And so did Grant.

“Richard,” Grant said quietly.

“Think carefully.””

The warning was subtle.

But I heard it.

My eyes moved between them.

“You two have been working together.””

“No,” Richard immediately said.

Too quickly.

I stepped closer.

“Then why are you defending her?””

“I’m not defending anyone.””

“Really?””

I lifted the tablet.

“Because my wife recorded a message saying someone helped Vanessa destroy our family.””

Richard looked away.

That small movement felt like a confession.

I pressed play.

The hidden file opened.

A video appeared.

The screen showed Claire again.

But this time, she looked different.

She wasn’t sitting in our bedroom.

She was sitting in my office.

Her face was pale.

Her hands were shaking.

“Ethan,” Claire whispered on the recording, “if you found this file, then Vanessa knows I was getting close.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Richard stepped back.

Claire continued.

“I need you to understand something. I didn’t discover the problem after I got sick.””

The room became silent.

“I discovered it before.””

My heart pounded.

Before?

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“I started noticing that our daughters’ schedules were changing. Their caregivers were being replaced. People I trusted were suddenly disappearing.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“And every time I asked Vanessa why, she said she was handling it.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t deny it.

Claire continued.

“But Vanessa wasn’t the only person making decisions.””

The video paused.

Everyone held their breath.

Then Claire said:

“Richard was approving them.””

The room exploded.

“No.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Richard?””

I looked at my uncle.

He looked older suddenly.

Much older.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

His face tightened.

“I can explain.””

“Explain why my wife thought you were helping Vanessa?””

“I wasn’t.””

“Then why did Claire say your name?””

He had no answer.

Grant stepped forward.

“You’re letting a dying woman’s paranoia destroy innocent people.””

I looked at him.

“Interesting.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“You keep saying she was paranoid.””

I held up the tablet.

“But you never once asked what happened to my daughters.””

The room went quiet.

Because he hadn’t.

Not once.

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“You think you know everything?””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“But I know enough.””

I turned back to Richard.

“Why did you approve changes to my daughters’ care?””

His shoulders dropped.

Finally.

A crack.

“I thought Vanessa was overwhelmed.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you helped her?””

“I thought I was helping the family.””

“My children were starving.””

Richard looked down.

“I didn’t know.””

“You didn’t know?””

My voice rose.

“You signed papers. You changed caregivers. You allowed decisions about my daughters while I was overseas.””

“I trusted Vanessa.””

“And Claire?””

He flinched.

That was when I knew.

There was something else.

Something everyone was avoiding.

Claire’s video suddenly continued.

Her voice returned.

“Ethan, there’s one thing I couldn’t prove.””

The room froze again.

Claire looked nervous.

“Vanessa wasn’t trying to take care of the girls.””

A pause.

“She was preparing them.””

Preparing them.

The words felt poisonous.

“For what?””

Claire leaned closer to the camera.

“She wanted them to believe their mother abandoned them.””

My daughters.

My beautiful little girls.

Someone had spent months rewriting their memories.

Teaching them to hate the woman who loved them most.

Then Claire whispered:

“Because once they believed I left them…”

The screen flickered.

“…they would never question who really wanted custody.””

The video stopped.

And in the silence that followed, Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

Not at the guests.

Not at Richard.

At the stairs leading to my daughters’ room.

Like she suddenly remembered something was still hidden upstairs.

Something she couldn’t afford for me to find.
