Chapter 2: The Secret Vanessa Was Protecting

The first thing I did was carry my daughters upstairs.

I didn’t care about the party.

I didn’t care about the guests.

I didn’t care about the Christmas decorations or the business reputation I had spent years building.

My daughters needed me.

I filled the bathtub with warm water while they sat together on the bathroom floor.

They looked around like they were afraid someone would tell them they didn’t deserve it.

“Daddy?”” Emma asked quietly.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you staying tonight?””

The question hurt more than anything Vanessa had said.

I knelt beside her.

“I’m staying forever.””

She looked at her sisters.

Then back at me.

“Vanessa said you liked your work more than us.””

I closed my eyes.

Six months away.

Six months of trusting the wrong person.

“Your aunt was wrong.””

“Was Mommy wrong too?”” Lily asked.

I froze.

Claire.

Even hearing her name from my children felt like a wound reopening.

Their mother had died eight months earlier after a sudden illness. Before she passed, she fought harder than anyone I knew. She spent every moment she could with our daughters.

She never abandoned them.

Not for one second.

“No,” I whispered.

I brushed Lily’s hair away from her face.

“Your mommy loved you more than anything in the world.””

“But Aunt Vanessa said—”

“I know what she said.””

My voice became softer.

“But sometimes people say things that are not true.””

After the girls fell asleep, I returned downstairs.

The Christmas party was still happening.

That almost made me angrier.

People were laughing.

Holding champagne glasses.

Complimenting the decorations.

Nobody knew what was happening behind the walls.

Or maybe someone did.

Vanessa stood near the fireplace with Grant.

When she saw me, she immediately walked over.

“Ethan, we need to talk.””

“No.””

She stopped.

“You’re going to listen to me.””

“I listened for six months.””

Her face tightened.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

I stepped closer.

“You sacrificed my children’s safety?””

Several guests nearby went quiet.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Don’t do this here.””

“Why?””

I looked around.

“Because everyone might hear the truth?””

Grant moved between us.

“Enough.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew.””

His expression changed.

“Knew what?””

“That my daughters were living like this.””

Grant scoffed.

“Be careful.””

“Is that a threat?””

“No. It’s advice.””

I stared at him.

Then I noticed something.

A small hesitation.

A nervous glance toward the hallway.

The same direction Vanessa had looked earlier.

“What’s in that cabinet?””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Nothing.””

Too fast.

Too defensive.

I walked toward it.

“Ethan.””

Her voice changed.

“Don’t.””

That single word confirmed everything.

I opened the cabinet.

Inside was an old tablet.

Nothing special.

The kind Claire used to record videos of the girls when they were younger.

My chest tightened.

“Why is this here?””

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“You don’t understand.””

I pulled away.

“No. I understand exactly.””

She looked desperate now.

“Give me that.””

I held the tablet.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

The silence was louder than any confession.

I turned it on.

The screen flickered.

A password appeared.

Then I noticed something taped to the back.

A small handwritten note.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

Claire’s.

The note only had four words.

“Ethan, when you return…”

My fingers shook.

Vanessa saw it.

And suddenly all the confidence disappeared from her face.

“Don’t open it.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because you’ll destroy everything.””

The tablet unlocked.

A video file appeared.

Recorded date:

Two weeks before Claire died.

I pressed play.

The screen went black.

Then Claire appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

“Hi, Ethan.””

My knees almost gave out.

My wife’s voice filled the room.

The entire ballroom went silent.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, it means I was right to be afraid.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Claire said the sentence that made Vanessa step backward.

“I need you to know the truth about what happened after I got sick.””

And suddenly, from behind me, Grant whispered:

May you like

“No…”

Because he knew exactly what Claire was about to reveal.
