Chapter 10: The Daughter Who Remembered Everything
The silence in my daughters’ bedroom was louder than any scream.
I stood frozen beside the empty beds.
Four little blankets lay on the floor.
Four small pillows were untouched.
But my daughters were gone.
For a moment, my mind refused to accept it.
No.
Not again.
I had already lost Claire.
I had already lost months with my children while someone poisoned their hearts against me.
I would not lose them now.
“Ethan!””
Richard’s voice came from behind me.
I turned.
“Where are they?””
Nobody answered.
That was when I saw Vanessa.
She was standing in the hallway.
Crying.
But she wasn’t looking at me.
She was looking at the note in my hand.
“You found it.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You knew?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why did you say that?””
Her lips trembled.
“Because Claire showed me that message before she died.””
The room went cold.
I stepped closer.
“You saw Claire?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
“When?””
She wiped her tears.
“The night before she went to the hospital.””
My heart pounded.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her answer was barely a whisper.
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost laughed.
“Afraid?””
I pointed toward the empty beds.
“My daughters are missing.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice broke.
“You don’t know what it feels like to walk into a room and not know if your children are safe.””
Vanessa looked away.
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
“I made mistakes.””
I stared at her.
“Mistakes are forgetting a birthday.””
My voice became colder.
“Mistakes are burning dinner.””
I held up the note.
“This was a choice.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
Before I could respond, Lily’s voice came from the doorway.
“Daddy?””
I spun around.
Lily was standing there.
Alone.
My heart nearly stopped.
I rushed toward her.
“Lily!””
I grabbed her and held her tightly.
“Where are your sisters?””
She pointed toward the hidden room.
“They went with Mommy.””
Everyone froze.
I knelt down.
“Sweetheart, Mommy isn’t here.””
Lily shook her head.
“Yes, she is.””
My breathing slowed.
“What do you mean?””
She looked confused.
“She told us where to go.””
I glanced at the others.
“What did you hear?””
Lily hugged herself.
“Mommy said Aunt Vanessa was scared.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Lily continued.
“She said we needed to find the place where Daddy kept his secrets.””
My eyes moved toward the hidden room.
The surveillance room.
But I never knew about it.
“What place?””
Lily pointed to the floor.
“There.””
Everyone looked down.
A small crack ran beneath the old wooden desk.
I moved it aside.
Underneath was a hidden compartment.
Inside was a small metal box.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a necklace.
Claire’s necklace.
The one she wore every day.
And beneath it was a recording device.
A tiny voice recorder.
I pressed play.
Claire’s voice filled the room.
“If Ethan found this, then my daughters remembered.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Claire knew.
She had prepared everything.
“She knew Vanessa would try to rewrite the truth,” Claire continued.
“But she didn’t know our girls would forget.””
A pause.
“Because children remember love.””
My throat tightened.
Claire continued.
“I need Ethan to understand something.””
The recording crackled.
“Grant was not acting alone.””
Everyone went still.
“Someone else inside the family helped him.””
I looked around.
The guests.
The relatives.
The people who had been smiling downstairs.
Claire whispered:
“And that person is the one who took our daughters tonight.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel looked toward the ballroom.
“No.””
I turned.
“What?””
His face had lost all color.
“I know who took them.””
“Who?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The person who knew every camera location in this house.””
My chest tightened.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“The person who installed the security system.””
A name.
A face.
A memory.
Someone who had been in my house every week.
Someone who had access to everything.
May you like
Daniel whispered:
“Your family’s security manager.””
