Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Family Name

Richard’s confession did not come immediately.

That was the worst part.

He stood there in the darkness of the old guest house, holding a folder full of secrets, looking less like a guilty man and more like someone who had finally accepted that running was impossible.

I stared at him.

“You were behind this.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“You still don’t understand.””

I laughed quietly.

“I’ve heard that sentence all night.””

Daniel stepped closer to me.

“Ethan, don’t listen to him.””

Richard looked at Daniel with disappointment.

“You really think he’ll protect you?””

Daniel froze.

I noticed.

“What does that mean?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked toward the table and placed the folder down.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then you need to accept something first.””

He opened the folder.

“Your family was already falling apart before Claire became sick.””

I looked at the documents.

Bank transfers.

Company records.

Private agreements.

Every page felt heavier than the last.

Richard pointed at one document.

“Your father built this company with discipline. But after he died, you inherited something you didn’t understand.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Power.””

I looked up.

Richard continued.

“You thought you inherited a business.””

He tapped the paper.

“You inherited a system.””

My stomach tightened.

A system.

A word people used when they wanted to hide something ugly.

“What system?””

Richard looked away.

“The kind where everyone protects everyone else.””

Daniel whispered:

“Ethan, he’s trying to make this sound bigger than it is.””

Richard smiled sadly.

“Is that what Vanessa told you to say?””

Daniel’s face changed.

I turned toward him.

“You knew more than you told me.””

Daniel looked down.

“I knew pieces.””

“Pieces?””

His voice cracked.

“I was twenty-six when I started working for your family. I thought I was helping successful people manage their lives.””

He looked at the folder.

“Then I realized I was helping them hide things.””

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Richard finally said:

“Grant.””

The name landed like a weight.

My uncle.

Vanessa’s brother.

The man who stood in my kitchen pretending to defend my family.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Richard looked at me.

“You want to believe he couldn’t do this because you loved him.””

I remembered Grant teaching me how to drive.

Grant showing up after my father died.

Grant saying he would always protect me.

Then I remembered him standing in my kitchen.

Not asking why my daughters were hungry.

Only telling me to calm down.

“Why?””

Richard sighed.

“Because Grant believed your father chose you.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“He thought the company should have been his.””

The room felt smaller.

Richard continued.

“When your father died, the board chose you because Claire believed in you. She convinced them you had the right heart for the company.””

I swallowed.

“Claire.””

Richard nodded.

“That’s why Grant hated her.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

“He blamed her for losing control.””

I looked at the tablet.

Claire had known.

She had seen the danger.

And I had been thousands of miles away believing everything was fine.

“What did Vanessa have to do with it?””

Richard’s face darkened.

“Vanessa loved power.””

A pause.

“But she loved Grant more.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Wait…”

Richard nodded.

“They weren’t just siblings working together.””

I felt cold.

“They were partners.””

Not just family.

Not just people making mistakes.

Partners.

The people closest to me had built a plan around my life.

My daughters.

My wife.

My company.

Everything.

I picked up the tablet.

“What was Claire’s recording about?””

Richard’s expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“You don’t want to watch it.””

I stepped forward.

“That’s exactly why I’m going to.””

Before he could stop me, I opened the hidden file again.

Claire appeared.

But this time, she wasn’t alone.

The camera angle was different.

Someone else was in the room with her.

A man’s voice spoke from behind the camera.

“You should have let this go, Claire.””

My blood froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Claire looked terrified.

“Grant, please.””

The recording stopped.

I stared at Richard.

Then Daniel.

Then the frozen image of my wife.

Grant.

He had been there.

Not after.

Before.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“Ethan, if you want your daughters safe, do not trust anyone inside that house.””

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

My daughters sleeping upstairs.

Taken minutes ago.

My hands went numb.

May you like

Someone was still inside the mansion.

Watching my children.
