Chapter 3: Claire’s Final Message

The room became completely still.

The kind of silence that happens before something breaks.

Claire’s face remained frozen on the tablet screen.

My wife.

The woman who used to dance with our daughters in the kitchen.

The woman who always burned the cookies because she was too busy laughing with them.

The woman Vanessa claimed had walked away.

Claire looked into the camera.

“I recorded this because I don’t know how much time I have left.””

My hand covered my mouth.

Around me, the Christmas guests stared at the screen.

Nobody knew where to look.

Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.

Claire continued.

“Ethan, if our girls are watching this with you, I need you to tell them something.””

She smiled sadly.

“Mommy never left because she was tired of you.””

My daughters weren’t in the room.

But I already knew what those words meant.

Someone had spent months telling them the opposite.

Claire took a shaky breath.

“I need you to tell them I loved every second I had with them.””

My eyes burned.

Vanessa suddenly moved.

“Turn it off.””

Nobody listened.

“Ethan, please.””

Her voice cracked.

Not from sadness.

From panic.

Claire continued.

“There are things I discovered after I became sick.””

She looked away from the camera for a moment.

“I thought Vanessa was helping us.””

Grant looked down.

That small movement told me everything.

Claire looked back.

“But then I started noticing things missing.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Money from our family account. Documents moved from my office. Conversations stopping when I entered the room.””

The guests began whispering.

Vanessa shook her head.

“She’s confused. She was sick.””

I turned toward her.

“Keep talking.””

She stopped.

Because she knew.

Claire’s voice continued.

“I confronted Vanessa.””

The screen showed Claire sitting in our old bedroom.

“She told me I was imagining things.””

A pause.

“Then she told me something I will never forget.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“She said Ethan would choose his work over everything. She said once I was gone, nobody would question her.””

The room erupted.

“What?””

“Did she say that?””

“Ethan…”

I didn’t hear them.

I only heard my wife.

“She knew I was recording.””

Claire looked directly at the camera.

“That is why I hid this.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Enough!””

I blocked her.

“No.””

Her eyes flashed with anger.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

Claire continued.

“Ethan, there is one more thing.””

The video glitched.

Everyone leaned closer.

“I discovered someone else was helping her.””

My blood turned cold.

Someone else.

The ballroom guests looked around nervously.

Claire continued.

“I don’t know how high this goes, but Vanessa couldn’t have done everything alone.””

Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the tablet.

I moved faster.

She grabbed my sleeve.

“Give it to me!””

For the first time, everyone saw her without the mask.

Desperate.

Terrified.

I pulled away.

“Who helped you?””

She said nothing.

“Who helped you starve my children?””

Still nothing.

Grant stepped forward.

“This is insane.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did you look toward the ballroom when Claire mentioned someone else?””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Everyone saw it.

A tiny flicker of fear.

The kind people show when a secret they thought was buried suddenly starts breathing again.

I turned back to the tablet.

Claire’s final words played.

“If something happens to me, Ethan…”

The screen flickered.

Her voice became quieter.

“Don’t trust the person who acts like they’re protecting our family.””

Then the video stopped.

No one spoke.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Grant.

Then the guests gathered around the ballroom.

Someone among them knew.

Someone had watched my daughters suffer.

Someone had helped create the lie that their mother abandoned them.

And as I held the tablet in my hand, one name appeared on the screen.

A hidden file.

A file Claire had protected until I came home.

The name on it was not Vanessa.

It was someone I had invited to my Christmas dinner.

Someone sitting only a few feet away from us.

May you like

And when I opened the file, I heard a voice behind me whisper:

“Ethan… don’t play that recording.””
