Chapter 6: The Truth Claire Buried

The old guest house had not been opened in years.

Everyone in my family knew that.

It was where my grandfather stored old furniture, forgotten paintings, and memories nobody wanted to revisit.

Which was exactly why my hands tightened around the tablet as I walked toward it.

Someone wanted privacy.

Someone wanted me alone.

And after everything I had discovered tonight, I knew privacy was where people hid their worst secrets.

Snow fell quietly across the property.

The Christmas music from the mansion faded behind me.

For the first time that night, I was completely alone.

Almost.

The guest house door was already open.

“Hello?””

No answer.

I stepped inside.

The air smelled like dust and old wood.

Then I heard footsteps.

A man emerged from the shadows.

Not Richard.

Not Grant.

Someone younger.

Someone I recognized.

“Ethan.””

My eyes widened.

“Daniel?””

Daniel was Vanessa’s former assistant.

He had worked for our family for three years before suddenly resigning two months after Claire died.

Everyone said he moved away.

Apparently, everyone was lying.

“You’re alive.””

He gave a bitter smile.

“That’s a strange thing to say.””

“You disappeared.””

“I was told to.””

“By who?””

He looked at the tablet.

“By the people who didn’t want Claire’s message found.””

I stepped forward.

“Start talking.””

Daniel looked nervous.

“I helped Vanessa organize things.””

My jaw tightened.

“You helped her?””

“At first, I thought it was harmless.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

He lowered his eyes.

“She told me Claire was unstable. She said you were never home. She said she was protecting the girls.””

“And you believed her?””

“I was wrong.””

The answer came quickly.

That surprised me.

Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out a folder.

“I found this after Claire died.””

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

He looked toward the mansion.

“Your family has been losing money for years.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were financial records.

Transfers.

Payments.

Hidden accounts.

My company logo appeared on several documents.

I felt sick.

“Someone was stealing from me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Not just stealing.””

He pointed at one name.

“Building a reason to remove you.””

I stared at the paper.

Then I saw it.

A signature.

A signature I knew.

Grant.

My uncle’s voice suddenly echoed in my head.

“You don’t know everything.””

No.

I didn’t.

Daniel continued.

“Claire discovered it.””

“How?””

“She noticed money disappearing while she was reviewing your company accounts.””

My breathing slowed.

“And Vanessa?””

“She was involved.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

But then Daniel said something that made me look up.

“She wasn’t the person in charge.””

The wind outside seemed to stop.

“What did you say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Vanessa was following orders.””

“Whose?””

He looked at me.

And before he could answer, the lights inside the guest house suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A crash came from behind us.

Someone had entered.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Ethan.””

I turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

And then the person spoke.

A voice I knew.

A voice that made every piece of the puzzle shift.

“Daniel was never supposed to talk to you.””

I stepped forward.

“Richard?””

My uncle stood there.

But this time, he wasn’t pretending to be confused.

He was holding a folder.

And he looked directly at the tablet.

“Claire should have destroyed that recording before she died.””

I stared at him.

The man who carried my daughters when they were babies.

The man who promised to protect my family.

“Why?””

Richard’s face hardened.

“Because your wife found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

He took one step closer.

“The truth about who actually controls this family.””

Then he looked past me.

Toward the mansion.

Toward the Christmas party still glowing in the distance.

And whispered:

“Vanessa was never the person you needed to fear.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because suddenly I understood.

The person who controlled my daughters was not the person sitting at their breakfast table.

May you like

The person who controlled everything…

was the person everyone trusted enough to never suspect.
