Chapter 14: The Truth That Destroyed the Family

The mansion had never felt so unfamiliar.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same Christmas decorations.

But now every corner felt like it was hiding a memory someone had stolen from me.

My mother arrived twenty minutes later.

I watched the front door open.

And for a moment, I couldn’t move.

She looked older.

Of course she did.

Twenty years had passed.

But her eyes were the same.

The same eyes that watched me learn to walk.

The same eyes that cried when I left for college.

The same eyes I thought I would never see again.

“Ethan.””

That was all she said.

And then I was holding her.

Not as a grown man.

Not as the owner of a company.

Just as a son who had spent his entire life believing he was alone.

“I thought you were dead.””

She cried against my shoulder.

“I know.””

“Why?””

She pulled back.

“Because your father wanted you safe.””

I stared at her.

“Safe from what?””

She looked around the room.

At Richard.

At Victor.

At Vanessa.

Then she said:

“From this family.””

Nobody spoke.

My mother sat down.

And finally told me the truth.

After my grandfather died, my father discovered hidden accounts.

Money that had been moved through family businesses for decades.

Richard was involved.

Grant was involved.

But there was someone else.

Someone higher.

“Who?””

My mother looked at the staircase.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father was part of it?””

She nodded.

“He regretted it later.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because he knew the people involved would destroy anyone who exposed them.””

My mother looked at me.

“He tried to leave.””

I frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

She took a shaky breath.

“But before he could reveal everything, he died.””

The room went quiet.

All my life, I thought my father was a successful businessman who passed away too soon.

Now I wondered how much of his life was a lie.

My mother continued.

“After he died, Richard took control.””

“And you?””

“I found the documents.””

She looked at the tablet.

“And Claire found the same thing years later.””

My chest tightened.

“Claire knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

My mother looked sad.

“Because she was protecting you.””

I looked down.

Protecting me.

Everyone kept saying those words.

But the people who claimed to protect us were the ones who hurt us.

“Who killed Claire?””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa started crying.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen.””

I turned.

“What?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I didn’t know Grant would go that far.””

My voice became cold.

“You knew something happened.””

She nodded.

“I knew Claire was scared.””

“Did you know she was in danger?””

A long silence.

“Yes.””

The answer broke the room.

I stepped back.

“You let her die.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I was afraid.””

I looked at her.

“And my daughters?””

She cried harder.

“I know.””

For the first time, I saw her understand the damage.

Not the legal damage.

Not the company damage.

The human damage.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Grant walked in.

Slowly.

Clapping.

Everyone turned.

“Well.””

His smile was empty.

“This is touching.””

My mother stood.

“Grant.””

He looked at her.

“You should have stayed hidden.””

My blood ran cold.

“You knew.””

Grant smiled.

“Of course I knew.””

He looked around.

“At this point, I’m surprised anyone still believes secrets stay buried.””

I stepped toward him.

“You destroyed my family.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I saved it.””

I laughed.

“By starving children?””

His expression changed.

For a moment.

Only a moment.

Then he smiled again.

“You still think this is about your daughters.””

He walked closer.

“It was never about them.””

I stared at him.

“Then what was it about?””

Grant looked at the company documents.

“The future.””

He pointed upstairs.

“And your daughters are the future.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did you do?””

Grant smiled.

“I made sure they would inherit a family they could control.””

Then alarms suddenly started blaring.

Everyone turned.

The front security screen lit up.

A message appeared.

*TRANSFER COMPLETE.*

Grant looked at the screen.

May you like

And smiled.

“The company is no longer yours.””
