Chapter 9: Plan B
The words on the page blurred.
Not because I couldn’t read them.
Because I didn’t want to.
*If Sarah ever discovers the truth, activate Plan B.*
Those seven words felt worse than any insult Daniel had thrown at me.
Because they proved something I had been trying not to believe.
This wasn’t a sudden betrayal.
It was planned.
My father sat across from me in the empty conference room.
The same room where company decisions had been made for years.
Except tonight, everything felt different.
“Tell me what Plan B is.””
My father looked at the paper.
“I don’t know all of it.””
“You found the letter.””
“Yes.””
“And you don’t know?””
He shook his head.
“Daniel kept parts of his plan hidden.””
I looked down.
That sounded exactly like him.
Always controlling information.
Always making sure nobody knew enough to challenge him.
I read further.
The letter wasn’t long.
It was more like instructions.
Names.
Dates.
Actions.
The final line made my stomach turn.
*“Sarah will never have the courage to use the clause against me.””*
I stopped.
My father noticed.
“What?””
I handed him the paper.
He read it.
His expression changed.
“He wrote this?””
“Yes.””
My father closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked furious.
Then disappointed.
“That’s what he thought of you.””
I looked away.
Because the truth was painful.
A small part of me had believed it too.
I had spent years trying to prove I deserved a place beside him.
And all along, I already had one.
I just never demanded it.
My phone buzzed.
A message from the company board.
*Emergency meeting scheduled. All executives required. Sarah Mitchell requested to attend as controlling shareholder.*
I stared at the message.
Controlling shareholder.
Those words felt strange.
Like they belonged to someone else.
My father noticed.
“You don’t have to do this.””
I looked at him.
“Yes, I do.””
“Sarah.””
“No.””
I stood.
“I spent six years protecting his dream.””
I picked up the folder.
“Now I need to protect the truth.””
The next morning, I walked into the company headquarters.
The same building where Daniel had spent years introducing himself as the person who saved everything.
Employees stopped talking when I entered.
Some looked surprised.
Others looked uncomfortable.
I understood why.
For years, Daniel had controlled the story.
Today, the story was changing.
The board meeting room was already full.
Daniel sat at the end of the table.
His attorney beside him.
When I entered, every conversation stopped.
Daniel looked at me.
“You actually came.””
I took my seat.
“Yes.””
He smiled slightly.
“I thought you would hide behind your father.””
I looked at him.
“I spent years standing behind you.””
I placed the folder on the table.
“I’m done standing behind anyone.””
The chairman opened the meeting.
“We are here to address allegations involving financial misconduct, misuse of company resources, and violations of shareholder agreements.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“These allegations are exaggerated.””
The chairman looked at him.
“Are they?””
Daniel glanced at his attorney.
Then back at the board.
“I built this company.””
The chairman nodded.
“And today we are discussing whether you are still capable of leading it.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at me.
Not angry.
Not scared.
Calculating.
Then he said:
“You really believe these people will choose you over me?””
I didn’t answer.
Because this was no longer about choosing sides.
It was about evidence.
The chairman opened the first file.
“Before we begin, there is one additional witness.””
The door opened.
Everyone turned.
My breath stopped.
Rachel walked in.
Daniel immediately stood.
“What are you doing here?””
Rachel looked nervous.
But she kept walking.
“I’m telling the truth.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“You work for me.””
Rachel looked at him.
“I did.””
A silence filled the room.
Then Rachel placed a folder on the table.
“I found these documents hidden in Daniel’s private archive.””
Daniel’s voice became sharp.
“Rachel.””
She ignored him.
The chairman opened the folder.
The first page was a financial report.
The second was a list of payments.
Then the third page appeared.
Everyone in the room froze.
Because it wasn’t about money.
It was a conversation record.
Between Daniel…
And someone I recognized.
Someone I never expected to see connected to him.
The chairman looked at me.
“Sarah, you need to see this.””
I stared at the page.
And my entire body went cold.
May you like
Because the person Daniel had been secretly working with for years…
Was the one person I thought was on my side.
