Chapter 6: The Secret Clause

I couldn’t speak.

The ballroom noise disappeared.

The music.

The conversations.

The footsteps.

Everything faded.

All I could hear was my father’s voice.

“Sarah?””

I finally whispered.

“What does that mean?””

My father took a deep breath.

“It means Daniel knew about the ownership clause from the beginning.””

I looked at Daniel.

He wasn’t pretending anymore.

He knew.

“You said he didn’t read the contract.””

“I said he didn’t read every detail.””

My stomach tightened.

“Dad.””

“I’m sorry.””

The apology hurt more than anything else.

Because my father had always been the one person I trusted completely.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Suspected what?””

“That Daniel was only staying because of the agreement.””

The words hit harder than the slap.

Because suddenly, every memory felt different.

Every anniversary.

Every promise.

Every “I love you.””

Was any of it real?

I turned away from the room.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

My father was quiet.

“Because I wanted you to see it yourself.””

I closed my eyes.

“I spent six years defending him.””

“I know.””

“I told everyone he was a good man.””

“I know.””

My voice cracked.

“And he was just waiting.””

My father didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

Daniel had been waiting.

Waiting for the right moment.

Waiting until he was powerful enough to believe nobody could challenge him.

I ended the call slowly.

When I turned around, Daniel was gone.

My heart jumped.

“Where did he go?””

The board member looked toward the hallway.

“He left with his attorney.””

Of course.

Even tonight.

Even after everything.

He was planning his next move.

I walked back into the ballroom.

The same room where he had humiliated me.

But it felt different now.

People weren’t looking at me with pity.

They were looking at me with questions.

A woman from the finance department approached.

“Sarah?””

I recognized her.

She had avoided eye contact earlier.

Now she looked nervous.

“I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

She glanced around.

“Daniel has been moving files.””

“What kind of files?””

“Personal files.””

My expression changed.

“Where?””

She swallowed.

“His private office.””

I immediately grabbed my purse.

“Take me there.””

The office was on the top floor.

Dark.

Quiet.

Almost abandoned.

The security guard unlocked the door.

Inside, everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Daniel’s desk.

His awards.

His expensive watches displayed in glass cases.

The life of a man who wanted everyone to believe he was untouchable.

Then I noticed something.

The bookshelf.

One section was empty.

“He took something,” the finance employee whispered.

I walked closer.

Behind the bookshelf, a small metal box sat hidden.

My name was written on it.

Not Daniel’s.

Mine.

I stared.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

The security guard looked uncomfortable.

“Maybe you should open it alone.””

I reached for the box.

It was locked.

Then I noticed a small envelope taped underneath.

Inside was a key.

And a note.

The handwriting was Daniel’s.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

Only one sentence was written.

*“If you found this, then you finally learned the truth about me.””*

I stopped breathing.

There was more underneath.

*“But you still don’t know the truth about yourself.””*

I looked at the locked box.

My heart started racing.

Because whatever was inside wasn’t about Daniel.

It was about me.

And when I turned the key, I found a document with my name at the top.

May you like

A document I had never seen before.

A document that proved my entire marriage had been built on a lie.
