Chapter 3: The File Hidden From Me
I walked outside the ballroom to answer the call.
The cold Chicago air hit my face.
For the first time that night, I could breathe.
But my hands were still shaking.
Not because I was afraid of Daniel anymore.
Because I was starting to realize I might not know my husband at all.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
The woman lowered her voice.
“My name is Rachel. I’m Daniel’s executive assistant.””
I froze.
Rachel had worked beside Daniel for almost three years.
I had met her at company events.
She was always polite.
Always quiet.
Always careful.
“Why are you calling me?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“Because tonight wasn’t the first time Daniel tried to erase you.””
I looked back through the glass doors.
Inside, Daniel stood surrounded by executives.
But for once, nobody was listening to him.
“What do you mean?””
Rachel exhaled.
“I found financial records.””
“What kind of records?””
“Transfers.””
My heart sank.
“From where?””
“Company accounts.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“How much?””
“Almost two million dollars.””
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had trusted Daniel completely.
I never questioned his spending.
I never checked accounts.
I thought we were partners.
Apparently, I was the only one who believed that.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
Rachel’s voice became emotional.
“Because I saw what he did to you tonight.””
I looked through the window.
Daniel suddenly looked toward the entrance.
Our eyes met.
Even from across the room, I could see his anger returning.
“Sarah.””
Rachel continued.
“I was going to report it internally, but Daniel removed several people from the finance department this week.””
“Why?””
“Because they found something.””
“What?””
Rachel became quiet.
Then she whispered:
“He wasn’t just hiding money.””
A chill ran through me.
“What else?””
Before she could answer, the call ended.
I stared at the screen.
No signal.
No explanation.
Nothing.
Then the ballroom doors opened behind me.
Daniel walked out.
His expression was controlled again.
The mask was back.
“Who was that?””
I turned around.
“Why?””
“Because you looked worried.””
I almost laughed.
“You’re asking if I’m worried?””
His jaw tightened.
“I’m trying to understand what you’re doing.””
“No, Daniel.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re trying to understand how you lost control.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Sarah, if you destroy me, you destroy yourself too.””
I stared at him.
Because that sentence revealed everything.
He still believed my entire identity was connected to his success.
He still believed I was just his wife.
Not a person.
Not a partner.
Not someone with power of my own.
“You really don’t know me,” I said.
His eyes narrowed.
“Who are you then?””
I looked back at the ballroom.
At the company logo behind him.
The company he built with my father’s money.
The company I had protected for years.
Then I answered:
“The person who gave you the chance to become Daniel.””
His face hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“Maybe.””
I paused.
“But at least it’s mine.””
Inside the ballroom, a man suddenly rushed toward us.
It was one of the board members.
His face was pale.
“Daniel.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
The man looked between us.
Then at me.
“Sarah, you need to see this immediately.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.””
The board member ignored him.
He handed me a folder.
A thick folder.
My name was written across the front.
I frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
The board member looked uncomfortable.
“Your father requested this be delivered only if the ownership clause was activated.””
I opened it slowly.
Inside was a document.
Not about company shares.
Not about money.
It was something else.
Something Daniel had never known existed.
At the top of the page was one sentence.
*“Evidence of Daniel’s actions collected over six years.””*
My fingers went cold.
May you like
I turned the page.
And the first piece of evidence had a date from the very beginning of our marriage.
