Chapter 5: The Man Behind The Mask

I read Rachel’s messages three times.

Each time, the words became heavier.

Daniel knows about the clause.

He has been preparing for this night too.

I looked up slowly.

Daniel was still standing across from me.

Watching.

Waiting.

And suddenly, I wondered if his fear had been real.

Or if it had been an act.

“Who texted you?”” he asked.

I locked my phone.

“No one important.””

His eyes narrowed.

That tiny reaction told me everything.

He knew.

Maybe not exactly what Rachel said.

But he knew someone had warned me.

“Sarah.””

His voice became softer.

Dangerously softer.

“Let’s talk privately.””

I almost laughed.

A private conversation.

That was where Daniel always won.

Away from witnesses.

Away from cameras.

Away from people who could see the truth.

“No.””

His eyebrows lifted.

“No?””

“Not this time.””

The board members watched silently.

Daniel looked embarrassed.

“You’re making a scene.””

I looked around.

“You slapped me in front of everyone here.””

His face tightened.

“I lost control.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made a choice.””

That sentence hit him.

Because he knew it was true.

A person doesn’t accidentally humiliate someone in front of two hundred people.

They decide to.

Daniel looked away.

For a second, I saw the man I married.

The man who held my hand when my mother passed away.

The man who promised we would build a life together.

Then I remembered the years after.

The distance.

The lies.

The way he changed when success finally arrived.

A man from the legal department approached us.

“Sarah, there’s another matter.””

I turned.

“What?””

He handed me a small envelope.

“This was found in the company archive.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was Daniel’s.

I recognized it immediately.

My stomach tightened.

“What is it?”” Daniel asked.

I didn’t answer.

I started reading.

The letter was dated five years earlier.

Only one year after we got married.

It was addressed to an investor.

The first line made my hands go cold.

*“My wife has no involvement in company decisions and should not be considered part of the business structure.””*

I stopped reading.

Daniel looked at the letter.

Then looked away.

“Sarah.””

I stared at him.

“You wrote this?””

“It was a business document.””

“You erased me.””

His jaw tightened.

“That wasn’t what I meant.””

“But it’s what you did.””

The legal officer spoke quietly.

“There’s more.””

He handed me another page.

This one was a meeting record.

Daniel had requested that my name be removed from several internal communications.

The reason?

*“To avoid confusion about leadership authority.””*

I looked at Daniel.

“You were afraid people would realize I mattered.””

“No.””

His answer came too quickly.

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“You didn’t want a partner.””

My voice became quieter.

“You wanted someone who would make you look successful.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You think you’re innocent?””

I froze.

“What?””

He smiled slightly.

And that frightened me more than his anger.

Because this wasn’t the desperate man from earlier.

This was the old Daniel.

The one who always had a plan.

“You should ask your father why he never told you everything.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel adjusted his jacket.

“You think your father saved me because he believed in me?””

I didn’t respond.

“He saved the company because he needed someone to protect his investment.””

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

He stepped closer.

“Ask him why he hid the second agreement.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

Second agreement?

I stared at him.

“What second agreement?””

Daniel smiled.

And for the first time that night, he looked confident again.

“You really don’t know.””

My phone rang.

I looked down.

It was my father.

I answered immediately.

“Dad.””

His voice sounded tense.

“Sarah, listen to me carefully.””

I walked away from Daniel.

“What’s wrong?””

A long pause.

Then my father said:

“There is something Daniel knows that I never wanted you to find out.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

My father lowered his voice.

“The company wasn’t the only thing I protected.””

I looked back at Daniel.

He was watching me.

Waiting.

My father continued.

“The night Daniel signed the agreement, he made one condition.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What condition?””

Silence.

Then my father said:

“He wanted ownership transferred only if you were still alive and still married to him.””

I froze.

“What?””

And then my father said the words that changed everything.

May you like

“Sarah, Daniel didn’t just build a company.””

“He built an escape plan.””
