Chapter 12: The Truth About My Family

I couldn’t speak.

My mother had been gone for years.

She was the person who taught me kindness.

The person who told me never to let anyone make me feel small.

And now Daniel was saying her name.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“I knew you would say that.””

I looked at my father.

His face had changed.

That scared me more than Daniel’s words.

Because my father wasn’t angry.

He was afraid.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What does my mother have to do with this?””

Daniel sighed.

“Ask him.””

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Then slowly turned toward my father.

“What happened?””

He sat silently.

Minutes passed.

Finally, he spoke.

“Your mother knew about Daniel.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?””

“She met him before you married him.””

I felt confused.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“She had concerns.””

I shook my head.

“My mother loved Daniel.””

“She loved you.””

The difference between those two things hit me.

My father continued.

“She saw things you didn’t.””

I sat down.

“What things?””

He looked at the old agreement.

“Daniel was charming.””

I almost smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

“He knew exactly what people wanted to hear.””

My father’s voice became quieter.

“Your mother believed he loved your future more than he loved you.””

I closed my eyes.

Because suddenly, memories came back.

My mother asking me questions.

Are you happy?

Do you feel respected?

Do you still feel like yourself?

At the time, I thought she was worrying too much.

Now I understood.

She saw something I refused to see.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

My father looked away.

“She tried.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She wrote you a letter.””

My heart started pounding.

“Where is it?””

My father stood.

He walked to another cabinet.

From inside, he removed a small wooden box.

I recognized it.

My mother’s.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were old photographs.

A necklace.

And an envelope.

My name was written on the front.

I couldn’t breathe.

“She left this for you before she died.””

I touched the paper.

“Why didn’t I get it?””

My father’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because she asked me not to give it to you until you needed it.””

I looked at him.

“And she thought I would need it now?””

He nodded.

I opened the letter.

The handwriting was unmistakably hers.

My eyes filled immediately.

*Sarah, if you are reading this, something happened that made you question the people around you.*

I stopped.

Then continued.

*Please remember this: the person who loves you will never ask you to become smaller so they can feel bigger.*

My hands trembled.

The next line destroyed me.

*Daniel is not the first person who will try to convince you that your kindness is weakness. Do not let him be the last.*

I covered my mouth.

My mother knew.

She knew.

A knock came from the office door.

My father looked up.

The security guard entered.

“Mr. Mitchell, I’m sorry, but you need to see this.””

He handed my father a tablet.

On the screen was a news alert.

*Daniel Mitchell Announces Emergency Press Conference After Alleged Shareholder Dispute.*

My heart sank.

“He went public.””

My father nodded.

I read the article.

Daniel had already created a story.

He claimed he was being attacked by a bitter wife trying to take control of his company.

He was turning himself into the victim.

The old Daniel was back.

But this time, I wasn’t standing behind him.

I was standing in front of him.

Then another notification appeared.

A live video started.

Daniel was on stage.

Surrounded by cameras.

And beside him…

Was Emily.

My sister.

The headline appeared beneath them.

*“Daniel Mitchell Reveals The Person Who Will Prove Sarah Mitchell Is Unfit To Control The Company.””*

I stared at the screen.

Because I knew exactly what Daniel was doing.

He wasn’t just fighting for the company anymore.

He was preparing to destroy my name.
