Chapter 11: The Original Agreement
I drove straight to my father’s office.
I didn’t call ahead.
I didn’t warn him.
I needed answers before anyone else could control the information.
When I walked inside, my father immediately knew something was wrong.
“Sarah?””
I placed the documents on his desk.
“Tell me about the original agreement.””
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Fear.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
He sat down slowly.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I spent my entire marriage believing I was standing beside someone I loved.””
I pointed at the papers.
“And now I’m finding out everyone knew pieces of the truth except me.””
My father looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
Silence.
I hated that sentence.
Because everyone who hurt me seemed to use the same excuse.
Protection.
As if hiding the truth was somehow kindness.
My father opened a locked drawer.
From inside, he removed an old file.
“This is the first agreement.””
I opened it.
The pages were older.
The ink had faded slightly.
I read carefully.
The ownership structure was different from what I knew.
Daniel hadn’t simply received investment.
He had received an opportunity.
But there was another condition.
A condition that changed everything.
“What is this?””
My father sighed.
“Daniel wasn’t chosen because he was the best businessman.””
I looked up.
“Then why?””
“Because he was the person you loved.””
The words hurt.
My father continued.
“I believed if he succeeded, you would succeed together.””
I looked back at the document.
“But there’s another clause.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“What does it say?””
He hesitated.
Then answered.
“If Daniel ever attempts to remove you from the company, ownership transfers immediately.””
I froze.
“Remove me?””
“Yes.””
My father looked at me.
“That was always the danger.””
I thought about Daniel’s words.
You’re my wife, not my business partner.
The way he had erased me.
The way he told executives I had no role.
He hadn’t just insulted me.
He had triggered the agreement.
I sat down.
“He knew.””
My father looked confused.
“What?””
“Daniel knew.””
I showed him the documents from his office.
“He knew the clause existed.””
My father took the papers.
His face became pale.
“How did he get this?””
“He planned for this.””
I looked away.
“He wasn’t surprised when everything happened tonight.””
My father read silently.
Then he whispered:
“He wasn’t trying to stop the transfer.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He was trying to trigger something else.””
My heart started racing.
“What else?””
My father turned the page.
There was another section.
A section Daniel had added years later.
My eyes moved over the words.
Then stopped.
*Emergency Control Transfer.*
“What is that?””
My father’s expression became serious.
“It means if Daniel could prove you acted against the company’s interests…”
I finished the sentence.
“He could take control back.””
My father nodded.
I felt cold.
Daniel hadn’t been running away.
He had been setting a trap.
The humiliation.
The public confrontation.
The argument.
Everything.
Maybe he wanted me to react emotionally.
Maybe he wanted me to appear unstable.
Then he could claim I wasn’t protecting the company.
My phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
Daniel.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
“What?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I know where you are.””
I looked at my father.
“How?””
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“Because I know you better than you think.””
My fingers tightened.
“What do you want?””
“I want to fix this.””
I almost laughed.
“After everything?””
“Yes.””
His voice lowered.
“But you need to listen carefully.””
I waited.
Daniel whispered:
“You’re not fighting me.””
A chill ran through me.
“You’re fighting the person who started all of this.””
My father looked at me.
I mouthed the words.
Started all of this.
Daniel continued:
“Sarah, your father didn’t tell you the truth because he was protecting someone.””
I stood frozen.
“Who?””
Silence.
Then Daniel answered:
May you like
“Your mother.””
My heart stopped.
