Chapter 13: The Public War

The cameras flashed as Daniel stood on stage.

I watched the live broadcast from my father’s office.

Every word he spoke was carefully chosen.

Every expression was practiced.

He wasn’t the angry husband from the ballroom anymore.

He was the wounded businessman.

The victim.

The man everyone should feel sorry for.

“My company has always been built on honesty and trust,” Daniel said.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because I finally understood something.

Daniel didn’t just manipulate people.

He studied them.

He knew exactly what version of himself they wanted to see.

The screen showed reporters raising their hands.

One asked:

“Mr. Mitchell, are you saying your wife is attempting to take control of the company unfairly?””

Daniel lowered his head.

The performance began.

“I never wanted this situation to become public.””

My father shook his head.

“He’s controlling the narrative.””

I watched silently.

Daniel continued.

“My wife has been under emotional stress recently.””

My hands tightened.

There it was.

The same strategy.

Make me look unstable.

Make him look reasonable.

The reporter asked:

“Are you concerned about the company’s future?””

Daniel sighed.

“I’m concerned about the people who depend on it.””

Then he turned slightly.

Toward Emily.

My heart sank.

“Thankfully, there are people willing to speak the truth.””

Emily stepped forward.

The woman who had once held my hand at my mother’s funeral.

The woman who had told me Daniel didn’t deserve me.

Now she stood beside him.

“I never wanted to hurt my sister,” Emily said.

My father looked at me.

I didn’t move.

I couldn’t.

Emily continued.

“But I can’t ignore what I know.””

The reporter asked:

“What do you know?””

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“Sarah has always struggled with pressure.””

The room went silent.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of what she said.

Because I realized she had chosen.

She had made her decision.

My father reached for the remote.

“We can stop watching.””

“No.””

I looked at the screen.

“Let me see.””

Daniel took over again.

“I love Sarah.””

The words almost made me sick.

“I always have.””

My father looked at me.

I whispered:

“He’s lying.””

“I know.””

But millions of people watching didn’t know.

That was the danger.

The next morning, the headlines were everywhere.

Daniel’s version spread quickly.

Some people believed him.

Some defended me.

But the truth was buried beneath rumors.

Then my attorney called.

“Sarah, we have a problem.””

“What happened?””

“Daniel filed an emergency lawsuit.””

My stomach tightened.

“For what?””

“He’s claiming you violated your shareholder responsibilities.””

I closed my eyes.

The trap.

The exact trap he had prepared.

“He wants the court to freeze my control.””

“Yes.””

“When is the hearing?””

“Tomorrow morning.””

I looked at the documents.

The ownership agreement.

My mother’s letter.

The evidence.

Everything.

Daniel had spent years preparing his attack.

But he made one mistake.

He underestimated how much evidence he left behind.

That night, I returned home.

The house felt unfamiliar.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

But it didn’t feel like my home anymore.

I walked into the bedroom.

The room where Daniel had told me he loved me.

The room where I had believed him.

Then I noticed something.

A small drawer near his side of the bed.

I opened it.

Inside was an old notebook.

I had never seen it before.

My heart started beating faster.

The first page had Daniel’s handwriting.

A title.

*“Five-Year Plan.””*

I turned the page.

The first sentence made me freeze.

*“Step one: Make Sarah believe she is essential.””*

I kept reading.

The next line was worse.

*“Step two: Remove emotional attachment once company value increases.””*

My hands shook.

There was no misunderstanding.

No excuse.

No explanation.

Daniel had written a plan.

A plan for me.

A plan for my marriage.

A plan for my life.

Then I reached the final page.

The last step was written in bold.

*“Step five: If Sarah discovers the truth, destroy her credibility before she can act.””*

My phone rang.

I answered without looking.

“Hello?””

My attorney’s voice came through.

“Sarah, we found something.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found Daniel’s original private files.””

I looked down at the notebook.

“Where?””

“In the company archive.””

My heart raced.

“What’s inside?””

May you like

The attorney hesitated.

“Everything.””
