Chapter 2: The Secret Daniel Never Read

Daniel stared at me like he was seeing a stranger.

The confident businessman who had been smiling under the ballroom lights only minutes earlier was gone.

Now he looked like a man searching for an escape.

“Sarah,” he whispered.

His voice was different.

Softer.

Almost careful.

“End the call.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t understand what you’re doing.””

A quiet laugh escaped me.

For years, Daniel had said those exact words whenever I questioned him.

You don’t understand business.

You don’t understand pressure.

You don’t understand what it takes to succeed.

But tonight, those words sounded completely different.

Because I finally understood something.

Daniel never wanted me to understand.

My father was still on the phone.

“Sarah, are you certain?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Don’t do this.””

The room was watching now.

Two hundred people pretending not to stare.

Executives who had ignored me moments ago were suddenly paying attention.

Evelyn moved beside her son.

“Sarah, this is ridiculous.””

I turned toward her.

“Is it?””

She crossed her arms.

“You’re emotional. You’re angry. You’ll regret this tomorrow.””

I almost smiled.

Because Evelyn had spent years telling me I was too sensitive.

Whenever Daniel dismissed me.

Whenever he took credit for my work.

Whenever she reminded me I was lucky to be his wife.

She always called it love.

I called it control.

My father’s voice came through the phone.

“Sarah, should I have the legal team send the documents?””

Daniel heard that.

His face changed.

“Documents?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

“What documents?””

“The ones you signed.””

His jaw tightened.

“I never signed anything giving you control.””

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I said quietly:

“You did.””

The ballroom became even quieter.

Six years earlier, Daniel’s company had almost collapsed.

His biggest investor had pulled out.

Employees were leaving.

Bills were stacking up.

He came to my father desperate.

My father agreed to help.

But there was one condition.

The money was not a gift.

It was an investment.

And the agreement included an ownership clause.

If Daniel ever abandoned the values the company was built on, the shares would transfer.

At the time, Daniel had laughed.

He signed without reading carefully.

Because he thought he would always be in control.

He thought I was just the supportive wife standing beside him.

He never imagined I would be the person holding the final card.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

I looked around the room.

“I tried.””

The memories came rushing back.

Every time I asked him to include me in meetings.

Every time he dismissed my opinions.

Every time he told people I was only there because I was his wife.

He had spent years proving exactly why the clause existed.

Daniel shook his head.

“This is insane.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“This is accountability.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You’re destroying your husband’s company over one argument?””

I looked at her.

“One argument?””

My voice became stronger.

“You watched him humiliate me in front of everyone.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because everyone had seen it.

The board members.

The employees.

The investors.

There was no hiding anymore.

Then Daniel’s phone started ringing.

He looked down.

The screen showed one name.

“Board Chairman.””

His expression changed.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?””

Everyone watched his face.

At first, he tried to sound confident.

“Yes, I know there’s confusion tonight.””

A pause.

Then his confidence disappeared.

“What?””

He walked away slightly.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Another pause.

His hand tightened around the phone.

“Who approved this?””

My father looked at me.

I already knew.

The transfer had started.

Daniel ended the call slowly.

His eyes were no longer angry.

They were terrified.

“What did you do?””

I didn’t answer.

Because another phone started ringing.

This time, it was mine.

The screen showed an unfamiliar number.

I hesitated.

Then answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke quietly.

“Sarah, you don’t know me.””

I frowned.

“Who is this?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“I work in Daniel’s private office.””

My stomach tightened.

“What about?””

There was silence.

Then she said:

“I found something you need to see before you take control of the company.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching me.

May you like

And suddenly, I realized his fear wasn’t only about losing the company.

It was about what this woman knew.
