Chapter 8: The People He Bought

The list was almost impossible to understand.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Every line represented someone Daniel had paid.

A journalist.

A consultant.

A former employee.

Even a private investigator.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“Why?””

Daniel looked away.

I stepped closer.

“Why were you paying people to watch me?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“I wasn’t watching you.””

I held up the document.

“Then explain this.””

He looked frustrated.

“Those were security measures.””

“Security?””

I laughed.

“You hired someone to follow me.””

His face hardened.

“Because I needed to know if you were trying to take control.””

The words hurt because they proved everything.

He didn’t see me as his wife.

He saw me as a threat.

The finance employee quietly left the room.

She knew this was no longer a company issue.

It was something deeper.

Something between two people who had spent years pretending they loved each other.

I placed the document on the desk.

“How long?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“How long have you been afraid of me?””

His expression changed.

“I wasn’t afraid of you.””

“Yes, you were.””

I pointed at the papers.

“You built an entire system around controlling me.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why did you need to know where I went?””

Silence.

“Why did you need reports about my conversations?””

Silence.

“Why did you tell people I had no role in your company?””

His eyes narrowed.

“Because I built it.””

The sentence came out before he could stop it.

And there it was.

The truth.

Not the one hidden in documents.

The one hidden inside him.

I nodded slowly.

“Thank you.””

He frowned.

“For what?””

“For finally saying what you actually believe.””

Daniel looked angry.

“You think you’re better than me now?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I think I finally know you.””

He stepped closer.

“You have no idea what happens next.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

His attorney entered again.

“Daniel, we have a problem.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

“The board filed an emergency motion.””

His face changed.

“For what?””

The attorney hesitated.

“To temporarily remove your executive authority.””

Daniel stared at him.

“No.””

“They have evidence.””

“From who?””

The attorney looked at me.

Daniel followed his eyes.

And suddenly, he understood.

“You.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t have to.

The truth was already moving without me.

Daniel walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

“You really want to destroy everything we built?””

I looked at him.

“We didn’t build the same thing.””

He stared.

“What does that mean?””

“You built a company.””

I paused.

“I built the foundation.””

His face tightened.

Then he left.

I thought that would be the end of the night.

I was wrong.

Twenty minutes later, my father arrived.

He looked older than I had ever seen him.

Not weak.

Just tired.

“I’m sorry.””

Those were his first words.

I looked at him.

“You knew everything.””

He nodded.

“Not everything.””

“Enough.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

I held up the document.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wanted you to choose your own life.””

I shook my head.

“You let me marry a man you didn’t trust.””

My father looked away.

“I hoped I was wrong.””

That hurt.

Because maybe he was right.

Maybe everyone had hoped Daniel would become the person he promised to be.

But he didn’t.

My father reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out another envelope.

“I found this in Daniel’s office before tonight.””

I stared.

“Another one?””

He nodded.

“This one is from Daniel.””

My heart sank.

“To me?””

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“To himself.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten page.

The first sentence made my breath stop.

*“If Sarah ever discovers the truth, activate Plan B.””*

I looked at my father.

“What is Plan B?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

May you like

And judging by his face…

I was about to find out why Daniel had been preparing for this night long before I ever walked into that ballroom.
