Chapter 10: The Ally Who Betrayed Me

The name on the document felt impossible.

I stared at it.

Then I looked up.

“No.””

The word escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

Across the table, Daniel watched my reaction.

And that told me everything.

He knew.

The person listed in those documents wasn’t a random employee.

It wasn’t a business partner.

It was someone I had trusted.

Someone who had held my hand when I cried.

Someone who had told me I deserved better.

My own sister.

Emily.

The room became silent.

I could hear the air conditioning above us.

I could hear papers moving.

But everything else disappeared.

The document showed years of communication between Daniel and Emily.

Private meetings.

Financial transfers.

Messages.

I looked at the dates.

The first one was from four years ago.

Four years.

Daniel had been building a secret relationship with my sister while standing beside me every day.

My hands started shaking.

The chairman looked uncomfortable.

“Sarah, are you familiar with this person?””

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Daniel leaned back.

For the first time, he looked calm.

Almost relieved.

Because he thought this would destroy me.

He thought this would make me weak.

He was wrong.

I had already survived the worst part.

I had discovered who he really was.

Nothing after that could hurt the same way.

“Yes,” I finally said.

The chairman waited.

“She’s my sister.””

A quiet reaction moved through the room.

Daniel’s attorney spoke.

“Before everyone jumps to conclusions, these documents don’t prove anything illegal.””

I looked at him.

“Maybe not.””

I picked up the papers.

“But they prove something.””

Daniel looked away.

“What?””

I turned toward him.

“That you always needed someone to help you control the story.””

His expression hardened.

“You’re making this personal.””

I almost smiled.

“You made it personal when you turned my family against me.””

The door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Emily walked inside.

My chest tightened.

She looked different from the sister I remembered.

Not because of her appearance.

Because of her expression.

She looked guilty.

Daniel stood.

“Why are you here?””

Emily didn’t look at him.

She looked at me.

“Sarah…”

I felt my throat tighten.

“How long?””

She lowered her eyes.

“Sarah, please.””

“How long?””

The room stayed silent.

Finally, she whispered:

“Three years.””

Three years.

I felt like I had been hit again.

Not physically.

Something worse.

Because I remembered every conversation.

Every time I asked her about my marriage.

Every time she told me Daniel was under pressure.

Every time she said I needed to be more understanding.

She wasn’t comforting me.

She was protecting him.

“Why?””

Emily started crying.

“I didn’t plan it.””

I stared at her.

“Then what did you plan?””

She had no answer.

Daniel stepped in.

“Emily, don’t.””

I turned toward him.

“Don’t what?””

He stayed quiet.

And suddenly, I understood.

He wasn’t protecting my sister.

He was protecting himself.

The chairman looked between them.

“We need an explanation.””

Emily wiped her eyes.

“I met Daniel because he asked me for advice.””

I laughed softly.

“Advice?””

She nodded.

“He said Sarah was becoming distant.””

My face went cold.

“He said that?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed him?””

She looked away.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You knew enough.””

Daniel slammed his hand on the table.

“This meeting is about the company.””

I looked at him.

“No, Daniel.””

I pointed at the documents.

“This meeting is about everything you built your life on.””

The chairman reviewed the evidence again.

“There is one more issue.””

Everyone looked at him.

He opened another file.

“Daniel used company funds to make several payments.””

My eyes moved to the page.

One payment stood out.

A large transfer.

Sent to Emily.

Daniel immediately said:

“That was a loan.””

The chairman looked at him.

“Without documentation?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

My sister looked terrified.

And then I realized something.

She wasn’t only hiding a relationship.

She was hiding money.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

*“You think Emily was Daniel’s biggest secret? Look at the original ownership agreement.””*

I looked up.

The room was still arguing.

Daniel was still defending himself.

But suddenly, none of that mattered.

Because someone knew something about the agreement.

Something my father never told me.

I stood up.

“Meeting postponed.””

The chairman looked surprised.

“Sarah?””

I grabbed the original documents.

“I need to find out what Daniel was hiding before I make any decision.””

Daniel watched me leave.

May you like

And for the first time…

He looked afraid again.
