Chapter 9: The Woman Emily Trusted

I spent the next hour trying to call the woman back.

Nothing.

The number was blocked.

No voicemail.

No trace.

Just a single conversation that left me with more questions than answers.

Daniel sat across from me at the empty ballroom table.

“You don’t trust Ethan now?””

I looked at the folder beside me.

“I don’t know what to trust anymore.””

That was the hardest part.

Not Vanessa.

Not James.

Not even the custody fight.

It was realizing my judgment had failed me.

I had spent two years believing I was protecting Lily.

But I had brought danger into our home.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Michael, you need to separate facts from fear.””

I looked at him.

“What facts?””

“Fact one: Vanessa hurt Lily.””

I nodded.

“Fact two: James helped her.””

Another nod.

“Fact three: Ethan has evidence that supports your side.””

I sighed.

“And fact four?””

Daniel hesitated.

“You don’t know why he waited so long to tell you.””

Exactly.

That was the problem.

Ethan entered the room carrying his phone.

“Michael.””

I stood.

“Who are you really?””

He stopped.

The question clearly surprised him.

“What?””

“I received a call.””

His face changed.

“From who?””

“A woman who said she worked with Emily.””

Silence.

Ethan looked away.

“You know her.””

It wasn’t a question.

It was an accusation.

Finally, he nodded.

“Her name is Sarah.””

“Who is Sarah?””

“Emily’s closest friend at the foundation.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me about her?””

“Because she disappeared after Emily died.””

“Disappeared?””

Ethan sighed.

“After Emily started investigating Vanessa, Sarah became afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

He looked at the door.

“Of someone inside your family.””

My heart sank.

“James?””

“No.””

The answer shocked me.

“Then who?””

Ethan didn’t speak.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Finally, he said:

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father has been dead for ten years.””

“I know.””

The room went silent.

“Then what are you saying?””

Ethan opened another file.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Vanessa sitting across from a man.

An older man.

Someone I recognized.

My father’s former business partner.

“His name is Robert Hayes,” Ethan said.

I stared at the picture.

“Why was Vanessa meeting him?””

“Because Robert had access to your family records.””

My mind raced.

“My father’s records?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because your father left behind something nobody knew about.””

I felt a chill.

“What?””

He pushed another document toward me.

It was an old legal agreement.

A company ownership document.

And at the bottom was a clause I had never seen.

A hidden inheritance.

My father hadn’t left everything to me.

He had created another account.

Another trust.

One that could only be accessed through Lily.

I looked up.

“Vanessa wasn’t after Emily’s trust.””

Ethan nodded.

“She was after something bigger.””

The room felt like it was closing around me.

“How did Vanessa know about this?””

Ethan looked serious.

“Because someone told her.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, the ballroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

She looked exhausted.

Terrified.

Older than she should have looked.

But I knew her immediately.

Not because I had met her before.

Because I had seen her face in Emily’s photos.

“Michael?””

My heart stopped.

“Sarah?””

She nodded.

Then she looked behind her.

Like she was afraid someone followed.

“I’m sorry I waited this long.””

I stepped forward.

“Why did you call me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I found the final message Emily left.””

I held my breath.

“What message?””

Sarah looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“The one she recorded the night before she died.””

My heart stopped.

“What did it say?””

Sarah’s voice shook.

“She said if Vanessa ever came near Lily…”

She paused.

“And if James ever betrayed you…”

The room went silent.

Sarah whispered:

“Then you needed to know the real reason Emily was afraid.””

She handed me a small envelope.

May you like

On the front were four words.

*For Michael. Do not open until she returns.*
