Chapter 7: The Brother Who Sold Me Out
I read James’ name at the bottom of the statement three times.
Each time, I hoped my eyes were wrong.
They weren’t.
James Carter.
My older brother.
The same person who taught me how to ride a bike.
The same person who sat beside me at Emily’s funeral.
The same person who hugged Lily and promised he would always protect her.
Now his name was attached to a document claiming I was dangerous.
“Michael?””
Daniel’s voice sounded distant.
I looked up.
“He signed this.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody needed to.
The truth was sitting right in front of me.
The officer cleared his throat.
“Mr. Carter, I need you to understand that this is only an accusation. The court will determine the facts.””
I nodded slowly.
But inside, I felt something breaking.
Because this wasn’t just about a legal battle.
This was my family.
Or what I thought was my family.
“I need to speak with James,” I said.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“Michael, don’t.””
“He owes me an explanation.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Be careful.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because people like James don’t make a move like this unless they believe they already won.””
Those words followed me as I walked outside.
The evening air was cold.
The beautiful garden where Vanessa and I were supposed to take wedding photos now looked completely different.
The flowers.
The decorations.
The chairs waiting for guests.
Everything felt fake.
Just like her.
I found James near the parking area.
He was standing beside his car, calmly checking his phone.
Like he hadn’t just tried to take my daughter away.
“James.””
He looked up.
For a moment, I saw guilt.
Then it disappeared.
“Michael.””
I walked toward him.
“How could you?””
He sighed.
“I knew this conversation was coming.””
“You signed a statement saying I’m unstable.””
“I signed the truth.””
The answer hit me harder than I expected.
“The truth?””
He stepped closer.
“You haven’t been yourself since Emily died.””
I stared at him.
“You’re using my wife’s death against me?””
“I’m trying to protect Lily.””
I almost laughed.
“Protect her?””
“Yes.””
He pointed toward the estate.
“You’re making emotional decisions. You almost married someone dangerous. You’re angry. You’re unpredictable.””
I felt my fists tighten.
“You helped create this.””
James looked away.
That tiny movement confirmed everything.
“You knew about Vanessa.””
Silence.
“James.””
He finally looked at me.
“I knew enough.””
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
He didn’t answer.
“How long have you been working with her?””
His jaw moved.
Then he said quietly:
“Long enough.””
The word felt like a knife.
I stepped back.
“You’re my brother.””
“And you’re my brother who never saw what was right in front of him.””
I shook my head.
“You’re doing this for money.””
His expression hardened.
“You think this is about money because you’ve never had to worry about it.””
There it was.
The resentment.
Years of it.
“I built everything myself,” I said.
“And I watched you inherit everything.””
“What?””
“The house. The business. Emily’s trust. Lily’s future.””
I stared at him.
“Emily didn’t leave anything for me to control.””
“She left you everything.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“She left it for Lily.””
James smiled bitterly.
“And that’s exactly why Vanessa needed you.””
My stomach turned.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
A car pulled into the driveway.
Vanessa stepped out.
My heart sank.
She looked different.
No wedding dress.
No tears.
No performance.
Just confidence.
“She told you, didn’t she?”” James asked.
I looked between them.
“You two planned this together.””
Vanessa walked toward us.
“Michael, you’re making this much harder than it needs to be.””
I stared at her.
“You hurt my daughter.””
Her face remained calm.
“I corrected her behavior.””
My jaw dropped.
“You still believe that?””
She ignored the question.
“You need to think carefully. The court will not look kindly on a father who attacks his fiancée in front of witnesses.””
“You’re lying.””
She smiled slightly.
“That’s the thing about the truth, Michael. The first person to tell the story usually controls it.””
I felt a chill.
Because she was right.
She had already started.
The officer.
The custody filing.
The witness statement.
Everything was planned.
Then James spoke.
“Just sign the agreement.””
I looked at him.
“What agreement?””
Vanessa reached into her purse.
A familiar purse.
The same one that held the second phone.
She pulled out a document.
“Give me temporary control of Lily’s trust.””
I stared.
“And then?””
“Then this goes away.””
I laughed quietly.
“You’re blackmailing me.””
“No.””
She tilted her head.
“I’m offering you a way to keep your daughter.””
My blood ran cold.
Because at that moment, I understood.
They weren’t trying to scare me.
They were trying to force me.
I looked at the document.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at James.
And I realized something.
They had no idea what Emily had left behind.
They thought they were holding all the cards.
But they had missed one important detail.
May you like
Emily knew them better than I did.
And somewhere inside that letter was the weapon they never expected.
