Chapter 13: The Recording That Changed Everything

The sound of my own voice coming from James’ phone made my entire body freeze.

For a second, I thought I was hearing things.

Then the recording continued.

My voice.

My words.

But I didn’t remember saying any of them.

“I can’t keep doing this,” the recording played.

My stomach dropped.

It sounded like me.

But something was wrong.

The room went silent.

Lily stood halfway down the stairs, holding onto the railing.

Vanessa looked nervous for the first time since I met her.

James held the phone tightly.

“I found this in Vanessa’s files,” he said.

I stared at him.

“You expect me to believe you’re helping me now?””

His face tightened.

“No.””

A painful silence followed.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””

Vanessa looked at him with anger.

“You’re really doing this?””

James ignored her.

“Just listen.””

The recording continued.

My voice spoke again.

“I don’t know how much longer I can handle this.””

Then another voice appeared.

Vanessa.

“I understand, Michael. You’re tired. You need someone to take over.””

My blood ran cold.

It was a conversation.

A conversation designed to make me look unstable.

But then I remembered.

I had never had that conversation.

I looked at James.

“She edited it.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Don’t lie.””

James turned toward her.

“You used an AI voice program.””

The room went completely still.

Even Vanessa looked shocked that he knew.

James continued.

“You recorded Michael’s voice from family videos and phone calls.””

I felt sick.

“How long?””

James looked down.

“Months.””

I stepped closer.

“Why are you helping me?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“Because I finally realized what she was doing.””

I laughed bitterly.

“After you helped her?””

He looked away.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I was angry at you. I thought you had everything. I thought I deserved more.””

He looked toward Lily.

“But then I saw her.””

His voice cracked.

“I saw Vanessa look at your daughter like she was a problem.””

Lily moved closer to me.

James swallowed.

“And I remembered Emily.””

The mention of her name changed the room.

“Emily trusted me,” he said.

“And I betrayed her.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Patricia stepped forward.

“My daughter has always been good at finding people’s weaknesses.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“She found yours, James.””

James nodded.

“She promised me money.””

I stared.

“How much?””

“Enough to make me believe I could finally have what you had.””

The honesty hurt.

But at least it was the truth.

Vanessa laughed.

“You’re all acting like I’m the villain.””

She looked around the room.

“None of you know what I went through.””

Patricia shook her head.

“I know exactly what you went through.””

Vanessa looked at her mother.

“You don’t know anything.””

“I know you hurt people.””

The words landed hard.

Patricia opened the confession document.

“Your first husband didn’t die naturally.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

I looked at Patricia.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“She manipulated his medication.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“That’s a lie.””

Patricia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I helped cover it up.””

Silence.

“I was afraid of my own daughter.””

The room felt colder.

Vanessa looked around.

Searching for someone to believe her.

Nobody did.

Then she looked at Lily.

And that terrified me.

Because even after everything…

She still looked at my daughter.

“Lily,” Vanessa said softly.

My body reacted instantly.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa ignored me.

“You know I love you.””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But powerful.

Vanessa froze.

Lily held my hand.

“You don’t love me.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You wanted me to disappear.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I never said that.””

“Yes, you did.””

Lily’s voice trembled.

“You said Daddy would forget me after you became my mommy.””

My heart broke.

Because my five-year-old daughter had been carrying those words alone.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That’s not what I meant.””

But Lily moved behind me.

And that was the moment Vanessa finally lost.

Not because of evidence.

Not because of documents.

Because Lily no longer trusted her.

Outside, sirens approached.

Vanessa heard them.

Her expression turned desperate.

“You called the police?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I glanced at James.

He nodded.

“I did.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You betrayed me.””

James looked at her.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I finally stopped betraying everyone else.””

As officers entered the house, Vanessa was taken away.

But before she left, she looked at me.

“You think you won?””

I said nothing.

She smiled faintly.

“You still don’t know everything.””

The officer guided her outside.

And I looked at James.

“What did she mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Because his phone started ringing.

The caller ID appeared.

Unknown number.

James looked at the screen.

Then his face turned pale.

“It’s him.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

James looked at me.

“The person who gave Vanessa information about Emily.””

He answered.

And a voice spoke.

A voice I recognized immediately.

My father’s old business partner.

Robert Hayes.

May you like

“I told you,” the voice said.

“Vanessa was never the only one playing this game.””
