Chapter 4: The Secret Emily Left Behind

The folder felt heavier than it should have.

I stood in the middle of the ballroom, surrounded by people who had come to celebrate my wedding, but all I could feel was the weight of the truth pressing down on me.

Vanessa looked at the man who had entered the room.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“Ethan,” she whispered.

The man didn’t look at her.

He kept his eyes on me.

“My name is Ethan Brooks,” he said.

“And before you ask, no, I’m not Vanessa’s fiancé.””

A strange silence filled the room.

I looked between them.

“Then who are you?””

He glanced at the folder in my hand.

“I’m the person who has been trying to stop her for the last six months.””

Vanessa finally found her voice.

“Michael, don’t listen to him. He’s obsessed. He’s been harassing me.””

Ethan laughed quietly.

“Interesting choice of words.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

“Because I have messages proving you contacted me first.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

I looked at the phone screen.

There were dozens of messages.

Vanessa’s name.

Her number.

Her words.

“Did you find out anything about the trust?””

“Does Emily’s account still exist?””

“Can Michael access it without Lily?””

My stomach twisted.

The trust fund.

The one my late wife created before she died.

The one I barely spoke about because it reminded me of the life Lily lost.

“How do you know about Emily?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at me sadly.

“Because I was Emily’s financial advisor.””

The room went still.

“You knew my wife?””

He nodded.

“I helped her create the trust.””

I tightened my grip around the folder.

“Why would Vanessa care about something Emily left behind?””

Ethan looked at Lily.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Because Emily didn’t just leave money.””

My heart started pounding.

“What else did she leave?””

Ethan opened the folder.

Inside were copies of legal documents, bank records, and handwritten notes.

“I found out Vanessa was searching for information about Lily’s inheritance before she even met you.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“That’s impossible.””

She looked away.

That was enough.

The woman who had spent two years telling me she loved my daughter couldn’t even look me in the eye.

“She knew about Lily’s trust before your first date,” Ethan continued.

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Emily set up the trust with a special condition.””

I looked down at Lily.

“What condition?””

Ethan took a deep breath.

“She knew something might happen to her. She wanted to protect Lily.””

My fingers trembled.

“My wife was afraid?””

“Not of dying,” Ethan said.

“Of leaving Lily vulnerable.””

Those words hit harder than anything else.

Emily had always been the strongest person I knew.

Even when she was sick, she smiled.

Even when doctors gave us impossible news, she held my hand and told me everything would be okay.

But now I realized she had been preparing for a future where she wasn’t there.

“She left a message,” Ethan said.

I looked up.

“A message?””

He nodded.

“She asked me to give it to you only if someone tried to gain control of Lily’s trust.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“Play it.””

Ethan hesitated.

“There’s something you should know first.””

“What?””

“The trust doesn’t go to whoever becomes Lily’s guardian.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Emily built a protection system.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“One that activates when someone tries to manipulate custody.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was different now.

No fake tears.

No innocent act.

Just anger.

“You have no idea what you’re doing, Michael.””

I stared at her.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

“No, you don’t.””

She pointed at Ethan.

“You think this man is helping you? He’s only here because he wants revenge.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked hurt.

“Don’t do this, Vanessa.””

She laughed.

“You’re still pretending you’re better than me?””

I looked at Ethan.

“What happened between you two?””

Neither answered.

Then Lily quietly spoke.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“What is it?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“She was scared of him.””

Vanessa froze.

I remembered what Lily told me.

The secret phone call.

The hidden conversations.

My daughter had seen more than I realized.

“What do you mean, sweetheart?””

Lily held onto my hand.

“She told him she was going to make you marry her before you found out.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Lily, stop lying.””

My daughter flinched.

I immediately stepped in front of her.

“Don’t speak to her like that.””

Ethan looked at me.

“She knows more than you think.””

He pulled out another piece of paper.

“This was found in Vanessa’s apartment.””

He handed it to me.

It was a timeline.

Dates.

Events.

My relationship with Vanessa.

Our wedding date.

The day she planned to move into my house.

And one sentence written at the bottom:

“Once married, remove emotional attachment between Michael and Lily.””

My hands went numb.

Then Ethan said something that made everyone in the room gasp.

“Michael, Vanessa wasn’t planning to become Lily’s mother.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“She was planning to replace you.””
