Chapter 12: The Mother Who Exposed Her Daughter
The house was hidden behind a long dirt road surrounded by trees.
The kind of place where someone could disappear.
That was exactly why Vanessa chose it.
She wasn’t hiding.
She was waiting.
I sat in the car with Ethan and Daniel while Sarah contacted the authorities.
“I’m going in,” I said.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“She has Lily.””
“And she wants you alone.””
I looked at him.
“She won’t hurt her.””
“How do you know?””
Because I didn’t.
That was the truth.
I had spent two years believing I knew Vanessa.
I didn’t.
But I knew Lily.
And Lily was the reason I couldn’t walk away.
Ethan handed me a small device.
“A recorder.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa talks when she thinks she’s winning.””
I nodded.
Then I walked toward the house.
The front door opened before I knocked.
Vanessa stood there.
No fear.
No surprise.
“I knew you’d come.””
I looked past her.
“Where is Lily?””
“She’s safe.””
“Let me see her.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You still think you’re in control.””
I stepped inside.
“Where is my daughter?””
“She’s upstairs.””
I moved forward.
“Stop.””
Her voice was sharp.
I stopped.
“You really don’t understand what’s happening, do you?””
“I understand you hurt my daughter.””
“No.””
She laughed softly.
“You understand the version everyone wants you to believe.””
I stared at her.
“What do you want?””
She walked toward a table.
A stack of documents sat there.
“The trust.””
I almost laughed.
“Still?””
“It was always the trust.””
“You destroyed our family for money.””
Her expression changed.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I destroyed your family because your family destroyed mine.””
I froze.
“What?””
Before she could answer, a voice came from behind me.
“I told you she would say that.””
I turned.
An older woman stood in the doorway.
Vanessa’s face changed completely.
“Mom?””
The woman looked at her daughter.
“You should have stopped years ago.””
I stared.
“You’re Vanessa’s mother?””
She nodded.
“My name is Patricia Reed.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Don’t do this.””
Patricia looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Michael.””
Vanessa’s voice became angry.
“Mom, leave.””
“No.””
Patricia looked at her daughter with tears in her eyes.
“I protected you for too long.””
The room went silent.
Then Patricia pulled out a folder.
“I have proof.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“What did you do?””
Patricia looked at me.
“Everything my daughter did started before she met you.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were old photographs.
Court records.
Letters.
And one document that made Vanessa panic.
“Where did you get that?””
Patricia looked at her.
“From your old apartment.””
Vanessa moved toward her.
But I stepped between them.
“What is it?””
Patricia handed me the paper.
It was a confession.
Written years earlier.
A confession from Vanessa.
My hands trembled as I read the first line.
“I know what happened to my husband…”
I looked up.
Vanessa’s face had lost all color.
Patricia whispered:
“She has been doing this for years.””
Then I heard footsteps upstairs.
A small voice.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
Lily stood at the top of the stairs.
And beside her was Vanessa’s mother.
But the woman wasn’t the only person who had come to save her.
Behind her stood someone else.
Someone I never expected.
James.
And he was holding a phone.
“Michael,” he said.
“I need you to hear this.””
His voice cracked.
“Because Vanessa was never the biggest threat.””
He pressed play.
May you like
A recording began.
And the first voice I heard was mine.
