Chapter 6: Emily’s Final Warning
I stared at my wife’s handwriting for almost a full minute before I could move.
The letters looked exactly like I remembered.
The small curve on the M.
The way she pressed harder on certain words.
The handwriting of the woman who used to leave notes beside my coffee every morning.
The woman who promised me she would always protect Lily.
Even when she couldn’t be there.
I slowly opened the letter.
“Michael,
If you are reading this, something has happened that I prayed would never happen.
I need you to trust me.
Not your memories.
Not your feelings.
Not the person standing beside you.
Trust the evidence.””
My throat tightened.
Ethan watched silently.
I continued reading.
“Vanessa knows about Lily’s trust.
She knows about the house.
She knows about the protection I put in place.””
I looked up.
“She knew?””
Ethan nodded.
“She found out somehow.””
I kept reading.
“But the money is not what worries me most.
Money can be replaced.
A child’s safety cannot.””
My eyes moved to Lily.
She was sitting beside Daniel, coloring quietly.
Completely unaware.
The letter continued.
“Michael, Vanessa is very good at becoming whatever people need her to be.
That is what makes her dangerous.””
I felt a chill.
Because that was exactly what she had done.
She became Lily’s friend.
She became my partner.
She became the woman everyone trusted.
Until the door closed.
Until nobody was watching.
“Do not confront her alone,” Emily wrote.
“She will deny everything.
She will cry.
She will make you question yourself.””
I looked at the empty ballroom entrance.
Emily knew.
Somehow, she knew.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And it changed everything.
“There is someone else involved.
Someone close to you.
Someone who will pretend to help you when the truth comes out.””
My breathing stopped.
James.
My brother.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
I looked at Ethan.
“Did Emily know about James?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation told me everything.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Ethan looked down.
“Emily suspected him.””
My hands tightened around the letter.
“Suspected?””
“She didn’t have proof.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she was afraid you would confront him.””
I closed my eyes.
Emily knew me too well.
I would have.
I would have defended my brother.
I would have said she was wrong.
And maybe that was exactly what they wanted.
A knock came from the entrance.
Everyone turned.
A police officer stood there.
“Mr. Carter?””
I walked forward.
“Yes?””
He removed his hat.
“We received a report about an incident involving your daughter.””
My stomach dropped.
“What report?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“Someone claimed you became aggressive and struck Vanessa during an argument.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“What?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That’s not what happened.””
The officer nodded.
“I understand. But we received a complaint.””
I looked toward the ballroom doors.
Vanessa.
She had done it.
She wasn’t running.
She was building her story.
The officer continued:
“There’s also another issue.””
“What?””
He held up a document.
“Vanessa Reed filed for emergency custody of Lily twenty minutes ago.””
The room went silent.
I stared at the paper.
“She filed already?””
The officer nodded.
“And she included evidence claiming you are emotionally unstable.””
My heart pounded.
Then the officer handed me another page.
A witness statement.
I read the name at the bottom.
My hands went cold.
Because the witness supporting Vanessa’s claim was someone I trusted my entire life.
May you like
My own brother.
James Carter.
