Chapter 11: The Woman Who Took Lily
I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t plan.
I just ran.
The picture was burned into my mind.
Lily.
My little girl.
Standing beside Vanessa.
Alone.
“Michael!””
Daniel shouted behind me.
But I was already outside.
Sarah grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
I turned.
“My daughter is with her.””
“I know.””
“Then move.””
Sarah’s eyes filled with fear.
“She wants you angry.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“Vanessa wants you emotional. She wants you to make a mistake.””
I looked at my phone.
The message.
The picture.
The threat.
“You’re telling me to do nothing?””
“No.””
Sarah shook her head.
“I’m telling you not to go alone.””
Ethan walked toward us.
“She’s right.””
I looked at him.
“You knew this could happen?””
“No.””
“Then why does everyone keep warning me?””
“Because Vanessa always follows the same pattern.””
I stared.
“What pattern?””
“She creates chaos. Then she positions herself as the solution.””
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time a video.
I pressed play.
Lily was sitting in the back seat of a car.
Her eyes were red.
But she wasn’t crying.
“Daddy?””
My heart broke.
“I’m okay.””
Vanessa’s voice came from behind the camera.
“Tell your father what you did.””
Lily looked confused.
“I didn’t do anything.””
Vanessa sighed.
“You need to tell him the truth.””
Lily looked directly at the camera.
“Daddy, she wants me to say bad things about you.””
My blood went cold.
The video ended.
I looked at everyone.
“She has her.””
Ethan grabbed his phone.
“We can track the video.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Michael, think.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She wanted you to see that.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“She wanted you to know Lily is scared. That makes you reckless.””
I hated that he was right.
But then I remembered Emily.
Listen to Lily.
Not your fear.
Not your anger.
Lily.
“What did she say in the video?””
Everyone looked confused.
I replayed it.
Lily’s words.
“She wants me to say bad things about you.””
I froze.
Not because of what Lily said.
Because of what Vanessa didn’t say.
She never told Lily to say I hurt her.
She told her to say something bad.
A vague accusation.
A setup.
“She needs Lily to make a statement,” I whispered.
Sarah nodded.
“Exactly.””
Vanessa wasn’t just trying to take Lily.
She was trying to make Lily part of the lie.
Ethan checked his phone.
“I found the location.””
Everyone turned.
“Where?””
“A private property outside the city.””
I grabbed my keys.
Sarah stopped me.
“Michael.””
I looked at her.
“Emily left something else.””
“What?””
She reached into her bag.
Another envelope.
“She said only give this to you when Vanessa takes Lily.””
I stared.
“How many secrets did my wife leave?””
Sarah’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Enough to save your daughter.””
I opened it quickly.
Inside was one sentence.
My hands shook.
*The person Vanessa fears most is not the police. It is the person who knows what she did before she met you.*
Below it was a name.
I read it.
And my heart stopped.
May you like
Because it was someone I never expected.
Vanessa’s own mother.
