Chapter 5: The Truth About Vanessa’s Past

The police were never called.

Not yet.

That was my decision.

I wanted answers before accusations.

I wanted proof before revenge.

Because Vanessa had spent two years building a perfect image, and I knew one thing about people like her.

They didn’t fall apart easily.

They fought.

I took Lily to a quiet room at the back of the estate while Daniel stayed nearby.

She sat on a small couch, holding the stuffed rabbit she carried everywhere.

The same rabbit Emily bought her before she passed away.

“Daddy?””

I sat beside her.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you mad at me?””

The question broke something inside me.

“What?””

She looked down.

“Because I told you about Vanessa.””

I immediately pulled her into my arms.

“Lily, listen to me.””

I held her face gently.

“You did nothing wrong.””

“But she said I was bad.””

I swallowed hard.

“No one gets to hurt you and make you believe it’s your fault.””

She nodded slowly.

Then she whispered:

“I tried to tell you before.””

My heart sank.

“What do you mean?””

“She was different when you weren’t home.””

I went completely still.

“Tell me.””

Lily looked nervous.

“She would smile when you came inside.””

“And when I left?””

“She stopped smiling.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What else?””

“She told me not to call her Vanessa.””

I frowned.

“She said?””

Lily nodded.

“She said, ‘Soon you’ll call me Mommy because your daddy won’t have a choice.’”

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to go back two years and see every moment differently.

Every dinner.

Every family photo.

Every time Vanessa touched Lily’s hair and smiled.

How many times had I missed the warning signs?

A knock interrupted my thoughts.

Daniel opened the door.

“Michael.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

He looked serious.

“Ethan found something.””

We returned to the ballroom.

Vanessa was gone.

My heart jumped.

“Where is she?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She left.””

“Left?””

“She said she needed time to think.””

I laughed bitterly.

“She ran.””

Ethan placed another folder on the table.

“I found information about her background.””

I opened it.

The first page was a report.

Vanessa Reed.

Previous names.

Previous addresses.

Previous relationships.

I looked up.

“She changed her name?””

Ethan nodded.

“Three years ago.””

“Why?””

“Because of what happened in California.””

I turned the page.

And my blood went cold.

There were newspaper articles.

Photos.

Court records.

Vanessa had been involved in another relationship before me.

A wealthy businessman.

A man who died eight months after marrying her.

The official report said natural causes.

But the investigation notes told a different story.

“She was never charged,” Ethan explained.

“Because there wasn’t enough evidence.””

I looked at him.

“And you knew this?””

“I found out after she contacted me.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because I was trying to confirm everything.””

I slammed the folder down.

“My daughter was living with this woman.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it feels like to realize you brought danger into your child’s life.””

The room went quiet.

Then Ethan said softly:

“Actually, I do.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pulled out a photo.

It was old.

A picture of Emily.

Standing beside Ethan.

And a little girl.

I stared.

“Who is that?””

Ethan looked down.

“My daughter.””

I felt confused.

“Your daughter?””

He nodded.

“Emily knew her.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?””

Ethan took a deep breath.

“Before Emily met you, she helped me when I was going through a custody battle.””

He looked at Lily.

“She was the kind of person who protected children, even when they weren’t hers.””

I looked at the photo again.

Then I noticed something.

The little girl in the picture was wearing a necklace.

A necklace I had seen before.

On Emily.

My voice became a whisper.

“Why does my wife have the same necklace?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because Emily gave it to her.””

“Why?””

His answer changed everything.

“Because Emily knew Vanessa was dangerous.””

I stepped back.

“What?””

Ethan handed me one final document.

A letter.

Written in Emily’s handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

At the top were five words:

“Michael, if Vanessa finds Lily…”

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Because the letter was dated.

Six months before Emily died.
