Chapter 3: The Papers I Never Signed
The world around me became strangely quiet.
The ballroom disappeared.
The music disappeared.
The voices disappeared.
All I could see was my daughter’s name on a legal document.
Temporary guardianship.
Assigned to Vanessa.
I looked at the signature at the bottom.
My signature.
My handwriting.
My name.
But I had never signed that paper.
“Daddy?””
Lily’s small voice pulled me back.
I quickly locked my phone.
“Everything is okay, sweetheart.””
But it wasn’t.
Nothing was okay.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Michael, what did you find?””
I handed him the phone.
His face changed as he read.
“Is this real?””
“I don’t know.””
My attorney, Richard, answered on the first ring.
“Michael?””
“Richard, did you send me a guardianship document today?””
There was a pause.
A long one.
Then his voice became serious.
“What document?””
My stomach tightened.
“The one attached to your email.””
“I didn’t send you anything.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching me.
Almost like she already knew.
“Richard,” I said quietly, “someone used my name.””
Another pause.
Then he said something that made my hands shake.
“Michael, get away from Vanessa immediately.””
I froze.
“Why?””
“Because yesterday someone requested copies of your financial records.””
“Who?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“Your brother.””
I looked across the room at James.
He was standing near the entrance.
Watching.
Waiting.
“Richard, what else?””
“There’s more.””
“What?””
“The request included a note saying you were becoming unstable after your wife’s death and needed someone else to manage your affairs.””
My chest tightened.
They weren’t just trying to steal my money.
They were building a story.
A story where I was the problem.
A story where Vanessa was the hero.
A story where Lily would be taken away from me.
I ended the call.
Then I walked toward James.
Every step felt heavier.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Why what?””
“Why would you do this?””
His expression hardened.
“You always had everything, Michael.””
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?””
“You had the perfect life. The perfect wife. The perfect daughter. The perfect house.””
I shook my head.
“That’s why?””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“It’s because you never noticed the people standing behind you.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You’re my brother.””
“And you were always too trusting.””
Vanessa came beside him.
Together.
Like they had rehearsed it.
I looked at her.
“You were never going to love Lily, were you?””
For the first time, she didn’t pretend.
Her face became cold.
“She made things complicated.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“She’s a child.””
“She’s an obstacle.””
The words came out so easily.
That was the moment something inside me broke.
Not because Vanessa betrayed me.
Because I realized Lily had been living with someone who saw her as a problem to remove.
I picked up my daughter.
“We’re leaving.””
But before I reached the door, the estate manager stopped me.
“Mr. Carter?””
I turned.
He looked uncomfortable.
“There’s someone outside asking for you.””
“Who?””
He glanced toward the entrance.
“He says he’s Vanessa’s fiancé.””
My blood ran cold.
“Her fiancé?””
The manager nodded.
“He says he’s been waiting for this day.””
Vanessa suddenly looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Terrified.
The doors to the ballroom slowly opened.
A man stepped inside.
And the first thing he said was:
“Michael Carter?””
I held Lily closer.
“Yes?””
The man looked directly at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“I’m sorry you found out this way.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.
“But you need to see what she was planning to do after the wedding.””
He handed me the folder.
On the cover was a name.
Vanessa Carter.
And beneath it was a photograph of someone I never expected to see.
My wife’s doctor.
The man continued:
“She didn’t choose you because of your money.””
May you like
He looked at Lily.
“She chose you because of something your late wife left behind.””
