Chapter 8: The Trap Emily Built

I refused to sign.

Not because I wasn’t scared.

I was terrified.

But fear was exactly what Vanessa wanted.

She wanted me desperate.

She wanted me thinking only about saving Lily for one more day.

Because desperate people make mistakes.

And Emily had spent her entire life teaching me one thing.

Never make decisions when someone is forcing you to panic.

“I’m not signing anything,” I said.

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what happens next.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, you don’t.””

She stepped closer.

“The court sees a man who assaulted his future wife on his wedding day.””

“I protected my daughter.””

“You pushed me.””

“You slapped Lily.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You have no proof.””

That sentence froze me.

Because it revealed something.

She wasn’t denying it.

She was challenging my ability to prove it.

Daniel came outside behind me.

“Actually, she might.””

Everyone turned.

He held up his phone.

“I recorded part of what happened inside.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You recorded me?””

“After I saw Michael carrying Lily out crying.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“I wanted to understand what happened.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You think one recording changes everything?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“But it’s a start.””

Vanessa looked toward James.

A silent conversation passed between them.

They were communicating without words.

That scared me.

Because it meant this wasn’t a partnership built on trust.

It was two criminals protecting themselves.

Ethan walked outside carrying Emily’s letter.

“Michael.””

I turned.

“What?””

“You need to see the rest.””

I followed him back inside.

The ballroom was almost empty now.

The guests had left.

The wedding decorations remained.

A reminder of the life I thought I was about to begin.

Ethan placed the letter on the table.

“There’s a second page.””

I looked at him.

“There wasn’t.””

“You didn’t see the hidden section.””

He pointed to the paper.

My hands shook as he showed me a small mark near the bottom.

“Emily used a security method.””

I carefully unfolded the hidden section.

More handwriting appeared.

My wife’s words.

“Michael,

If Vanessa has reached this point, she has likely convinced you that you are alone.

You are not.””

I swallowed.

“She knew.””

Ethan nodded.

“She prepared for this.””

I kept reading.

“The trust has a condition.

If anyone attempts to gain control of Lily’s inheritance through manipulation, fraud, or false custody claims, the trust automatically transfers to a protected account.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Vanessa can’t touch the money.””

I exhaled.

But Ethan wasn’t finished.

“However…”

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“The protection only activates if the court recognizes the attempt.””

I frowned.

“So we need to prove what they did.””

“Yes.””

I looked back at the letter.

Emily had created a puzzle.

A final gift.

A way to protect Lily even after she was gone.

Then I noticed another sentence.

“You must find the person who helped Vanessa.””

I looked at Ethan.

“We know.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“You know who helped her today.””

He pointed at the letter.

“Emily was talking about someone else.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Ethan looked toward the door.

“Someone who had access to information only your family knew.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“Someone else?””

He nodded.

“Someone who helped Vanessa get close to you.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Michael, don’t trust Ethan.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The woman breathed heavily.

“I worked with Emily before she died.””

My grip tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

“She discovered the truth about Vanessa.””

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m the reason Emily started investigating her.””

My heart pounded.

“Where are you?””

But the woman didn’t answer.

Instead, she said:

“Your brother wasn’t the first person Vanessa targeted.””

The call suddenly ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then Ethan asked:

“What happened?””

May you like

I looked at him.

And for the first time, I wondered if he had been telling me only half the truth.
