Chapter 8: The Secret Richard Kept
The ballroom emptied slowly.
The guests left with whispers.
The photographers packed away their equipment.
The flowers remained on the tables, beautiful and untouched.
A wedding celebration had become an investigation.
And somehow, I felt like the only person who still didn’t know the whole story was me.
I looked at Richard.
The man I had loved for six years.
The man who held me when my mother died.
The man who promised me honesty.
“Richard.””
He looked at me.
I held up my phone.
“Someone told me to ask what happened before our wedding.””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
After everything today, I noticed every reaction.
“What happened?””
He looked away.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“Not today.””
He swallowed.
“I didn’t want you involved in this.””
I stared at him.
“I was already involved.””
I pointed toward the documents.
“My name was used.””
Silence.
“What happened six years ago?””
Richard sat down.
For the first time all day, he looked tired.
Not angry.
Not disappointed.
Broken.
“Before I met you, Vanessa and I were already struggling.””
I listened.
“She had debts.””
“How much?””
He hesitated.
“Almost two hundred thousand dollars.””
I felt a chill.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I was embarrassed.””
I looked at him.
“Embarrassment doesn’t explain forged documents.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Richard rubbed his face.
“When I divorced Vanessa, she begged me for help.””
“Did you give it?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Enough to keep her from losing everything.””
I looked at him.
“And Chloe?””
His eyes softened.
“She was sixteen.””
I understood.
He had wanted to protect his daughter.
But protection had become secrecy.
And secrecy had become this.
Richard continued.
“After I married you, Vanessa started contacting me again.””
“For money?””
“Yes.””
I looked down.
“And you hid it.””
“Yes.””
The answer hurt because it was immediate.
“How long?””
“Almost a year.””
I stepped back.
“A year?””
“I was trying to solve it.””
“Without telling me?””
He nodded.
“I thought I could handle it.””
I laughed softly.
“That’s what everyone says before everything falls apart.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I was wrong.””
Before I could respond, Daniel approached.
“I need to show you something.””
He handed me a tablet.
“We traced the unknown message.””
My heart tightened.
“Who sent it?””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Someone who had access to the original files.””
Richard frowned.
“Who?””
Daniel turned the screen.
A name appeared.
Vanessa Carter.
I looked at her across the room.
She had been watching us.
She knew.
“You sent that?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The officer stepped closer.
“Mrs. Carter?””
She sighed.
Then laughed.
A strange, defeated laugh.
“I wanted her to know.””
Richard looked disgusted.
“You exposed yourself?””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I exposed him.””
The room froze.
I looked at Richard.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“Ask him who paid for your first house.””
My stomach tightened.
“Richard?””
He didn’t answer.
And that silence told me enough.
“Richard.””
He looked at me.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He looked away.
I felt something inside me crack.
“Tell me.””
He took a deep breath.
“The money came from a settlement.””
“What settlement?””
He hesitated.
“From Vanessa.””
I stared.
“What?””
“When we divorced, she transferred some assets.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She smiled.
“Not all of them.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“You should tell her the truth.””
Nobody moved.
“Tell her what you did.””
Richard’s expression changed.
I whispered:
“What did you do?””
He looked at me.
And I saw regret.
“I hid something.””
“What?””
His voice was barely audible.
“The money you thought was mine…”
He stopped.
“It was never completely mine.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“Richard.””
He looked at me.
“Some of it came from an account Vanessa controlled.””
I stared.
“An account you didn’t tell me about?””
“Yes.””
“And why?””
His eyes filled with guilt.
“Because I was afraid you would leave.””
The words hurt.
Not because of the money.
Because he had chosen fear over honesty.
Then Daniel’s tablet made a sound.
A new file appeared.
He looked at it.
Then his expression changed.
“Wait.””
“What?””
He turned the screen toward us.
A transfer record.
Six years old.
The day before my wedding.
And the recipient name made my heart stop.
Because the money wasn’t sent to Richard.
May you like
It wasn’t sent to Vanessa.
It was sent to me.
