Chapter 5: The Debt She Tried to Hide
The number stared back at me.
Five hundred thousand dollars.
I looked at Chloe.
She looked smaller than she had all day.
Not like a bride.
Not like someone celebrating.
Like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
Richard picked up the loan agreement.
“Explain.””
Chloe wiped her face.
“Dad…”
“Explain.””
His voice was different now.
Not angry.
Disappointed.
And somehow, that was worse.
Chloe looked at Brandon.
He looked away.
That told me everything.
“You took out half a million dollars?”” Richard asked.
Chloe shook her head.
“I didn’t spend it.””
“Then where did it go?””
No answer.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I can explain.””
Richard laughed once.
A cold, humorless sound.
“I’m sure you can.””
She glared at him.
“This family has been struggling.””
“What family?”” Richard asked.
“The one you created with Emily’s money?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“I am Chloe’s mother.””
Richard nodded.
“And Emily has spent six years acting like one.””
The words hit Chloe.
She looked at me.
“I never hated you.””
I stayed quiet.
Because hate would have been easier.
Hate was simple.
This was something worse.
She had loved what I gave her.
Just not me.
Daniel pointed at the agreement.
“This loan was taken from a private lender.””
Richard frowned.
“Why?””
“Because traditional banks rejected the application.””
I looked closer.
The loan date was three months earlier.
The same month Chloe married Brandon.
I looked up.
“You were already in debt when you asked me to pay for this wedding.””
Chloe whispered.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She started crying.
“Because Brandon promised he had a business opportunity.””
I looked at Brandon.
“What opportunity?””
He didn’t answer.
Laura stepped forward.
“I know.””
Everyone looked at her.
She sighed.
“My son was trying to invest in a company that didn’t exist.””
Brandon’s face turned angry.
“Mom, stop talking.””
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“I protected you for years. I covered your mistakes. I lied for you.””
She looked at Richard.
“I’m done.””
Richard stared at Brandon.
“You convinced my daughter to take out a fake business loan?””
Brandon shook his head.
“No.””
Laura interrupted.
“He convinced her that marrying into your family would solve everything.””
Chloe closed her eyes.
I saw the pain on her face.
But I couldn’t tell if it was regret or fear.
“Chloe,” I said softly.
She looked at me.
“Did you marry him because you loved him?””
The question broke something in the room.
She didn’t answer immediately.
Finally, she whispered:
“At first.””
My heart sank.
“At first?””
She looked down.
“Then everything became complicated.””
I nodded slowly.
Complicated.
That was what people called betrayal when they didn’t want to admit what they had done.
Daniel opened another file.
“There is one more issue.””
Richard looked exhausted.
“What now?””
“The loan was secured against future family assets.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What assets?””
Daniel looked at Chloe.
“The Bennett family properties.””
Richard froze.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel nodded.
“Normally, yes.””
He handed him another document.
“This authorization was submitted with the loan application.””
Richard read it.
Then his face turned pale.
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“What?””
He handed me the paper.
At the bottom was his signature.
Except it wasn’t his.
Just like the transfer document.
Someone had forged it.
Someone had been preparing to take everything.
The venue lights reflected off the paper as I stared.
Six years.
Six years of trusting people who were planning to erase me.
Then Chloe suddenly spoke.
“I didn’t know they were going that far.””
I looked at her.
“You knew enough.””
She cried.
“I was scared.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed toward the documents.
“But fear didn’t write these.””
I pointed toward the photo.
“Fear didn’t create that plan.””
I looked directly at her.
“You made choices.””
The ballroom doors opened again.
A police officer walked in.
Every conversation stopped.
Richard looked confused.
“Officer?””
The officer approached Daniel.
“Mr. Brooks?””
Daniel nodded.
The officer handed him a folder.
“We found the original files.””
Daniel opened it.
Then his expression changed.
“What is it?””
He looked at me.
“I’m afraid the fraud started earlier than we thought.””
My heart dropped.
“How much earlier?””
Daniel turned the folder around.
There was a date.
Six years ago.
The exact month I married Richard.
And beneath it was the first forged document.
A life insurance policy.
May you like
With my name on it.
And Chloe listed as the beneficiary.
