Chapter 2: The Money They Thought Was Invisible

Richard stared at the honeymoon receipt like it was written in another language.

“Vanessa,” he said slowly, “why is your name attached to Chloe’s honeymoon package?””

The entire ballroom waited.

Vanessa looked around.

For the first time all afternoon, she looked nervous.

“That’s a misunderstanding.””

I almost smiled.

A misunderstanding was forgetting someone’s birthday.

A misunderstanding was sending the wrong invitation.

This was something else.

Richard held up the receipt.

“Explain.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Emily paid for the wedding. I was helping organize things.””

“Helping?”” Richard repeated.

“Yes.””

I reached into the envelope again.

“Then maybe you can explain this too.””

I pulled out a bank statement.

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

Richard took it.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then he looked at Chloe.

“Why was twenty-four thousand dollars transferred to Brandon?””

Chloe’s husband-to-be looked away.

That was when I noticed something.

He wasn’t shocked.

He wasn’t confused.

He was scared.

“Brandon?”” Richard said.

No answer.

“Answer me.””

Brandon cleared his throat.

“It was for wedding expenses.””

I stepped forward.

“That’s what Chloe told me.””

Everyone looked at me.

“She said the money was needed for the venue.””

Richard looked down again.

“But the payment went to his private account.””

Silence.

Chloe shook her head.

“You’re twisting everything.””

I looked at her.

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“You’re doing this because I hurt your feelings.””

Those words hurt more than the slap.

Because even now, she still didn’t understand.

This wasn’t about a wedding photo.

It wasn’t about one insult.

It was about years of lies.

I reached into the envelope one more time.

“And this is the document that made me realize how deep this goes.””

I placed a paper in Richard’s hand.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

“What is this?””

I answered quietly.

“A transfer authorization.””

His eyes moved down the page.

“Emily…”

“I never signed that.””

Richard looked at the signature.

The room felt colder.

The amount was written clearly.

$150,000.

A transfer from my account.

To an account belonging to Vanessa and Brandon.

Richard looked at his ex-wife.

“Did you forge my wife’s signature?””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can explain.””

“Then explain!””

Her voice lowered.

“Richard, don’t do this here.””

I looked around at the guests.

The irony almost made me laugh.

She was worried about embarrassment now?

After her daughter slapped me in front of everyone?

After they used me?

Chloe grabbed my arm.

“Give me the papers.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“You’re destroying my wedding.””

I looked at her.

“No, Chloe.””

My voice was quiet.

“You destroyed your wedding the moment you decided your stepmother was someone you could use.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

But I couldn’t tell if they were real.

“I didn’t know about this.””

I studied her face.

“Didn’t know about what?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

Brandon suddenly grabbed Vanessa’s wrist.

“We need to leave.””

Richard stepped in front of them.

“Why?””

Brandon froze.

Richard’s voice became dangerous.

“Why do you need to leave?””

Nobody answered.

Then Chloe broke.

She covered her face.

“Dad…”

Richard turned toward her.

“Tell me the truth.””

She looked at Brandon.

Then at her mother.

Finally, she whispered:

“The wedding had to happen today.””

“Why?””

“Because…”

Her voice shook.

“Because Emily wasn’t supposed to find out until after.””

My stomach dropped.

“Find out what?””

Chloe started crying.

Richard looked furious.

“Chloe.””

She couldn’t answer.

So I did.

“Open the last page.””

Richard looked down.

I had placed it at the bottom of the envelope.

A marriage certificate.

His hands went still.

“What is this?””

Nobody moved.

Richard read the names.

Chloe Bennett.

Brandon Hayes.

The date was three months earlier.

Three months.

My fingers tightened around my purse.

“You were already married?””

Chloe whispered.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked away.

“After the wedding.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe it.

“You wanted me to pay for a wedding that was fake?””

“It wasn’t fake!””

“Then why hide the truth?””

No answer.

Richard looked at Brandon.

“You married my daughter three months ago.””

Brandon nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let Emily spend eighty-five thousand dollars on today?””

Brandon opened his mouth.

But Vanessa interrupted.

“Because the wedding was important.””

Richard looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“The money was important.””

The wedding planner stood nearby, frozen.

The guests whispered among themselves.

And then Chloe suddenly looked at me.

Not with anger.

With fear.

“Emily…”

I stared at her.

“What?””

Her lips trembled.

“There’s something you don’t know.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

She looked toward the entrance of the ballroom.

A man in a dark suit had just walked inside.

And when he saw me, he stopped.

Because he knew my name.

“Mrs. Bennett,” he said.

Everyone turned.

“I’m sorry, but I need to speak with you about the other account.””

My blood went cold.

“The other account?””

He opened his briefcase.

May you like

Then pulled out a folder.

And the name written across the top made Richard’s face change.
