Chapter 13: The Brother Behind the Curtain

The name on the screen refused to make sense.

Jonathan Bennett.

Richard’s brother.

The man who hugged me at Christmas.

The man who toasted our marriage.

The man who called me “the best thing that ever happened to Richard.””

My hands went cold.

“No.””

Richard looked at the screen.

Then he closed his eyes.

“Jonathan.””

Michael nodded.

“He was involved from the beginning.””

Richard shook his head.

“No. He wouldn’t.””

The pain in his voice was different.

This wasn’t anger.

This was someone realizing another piece of his life had been fake.

Daniel turned the laptop toward Richard.

“The oldest transfers went into an account controlled by Jonathan Bennett.””

Richard stared.

“How much?””

Daniel scrolled.

“Over six years?””

He paused.

“Almost four hundred thousand dollars.””

Nobody spoke.

Chloe covered her mouth.

“Uncle Jonathan?””

I looked at her.

Even she was shocked.

That told me something.

Jonathan had fooled everyone.

Vanessa.

Brandon.

Chloe.

Richard.

Me.

Michael opened another folder.

“He was the one who introduced Vanessa to the financial strategy.””

Richard looked at him.

“You knew?””

Michael didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The room erupted.

Richard stepped forward.

“You knew my brother was doing this?””

Michael stayed calm.

“I knew he was dangerous.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was trying to gather proof.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“For six years?””

Michael looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

I stared at all of them.

That sentence followed every betrayal.

Mistakes.

Secrets.

Fear.

Everyone had a reason.

Nobody had an excuse.

Daniel received another alert.

His face changed.

“What?””

He looked toward the entrance.

“Jonathan is here.””

Richard froze.

“What?””

The ballroom doors opened.

And there he was.

Jonathan Bennett.

Perfectly dressed.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he wasn’t walking into the aftermath of a crime.

He smiled.

“Richard.””

Nobody answered.

His eyes moved around the room.

Then landed on me.

“Emily.””

I stared at him.

“How long?””

His smile faded slightly.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

I laughed.

“Don’t insult me.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mr. Bennett, we need you to answer some questions.””

Jonathan looked amused.

“About what?””

I held up the documents.

“About stealing from me.””

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You found the files.””

Richard looked at him.

“You knew.””

Jonathan sighed.

“Richard…”

“No.””

His voice shook.

“You knew.””

Jonathan looked at his brother.

“I was trying to save you.””

Richard stared.

“By destroying my wife?””

Jonathan’s face hardened.

“Your wife had no idea what she married into.””

I felt my chest tighten.

There it was.

The belief they all shared.

That I was too naive to understand.

That I was only useful because I trusted.

Jonathan continued.

“You think everything was perfect before Emily?””

Richard stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

“No.””

Jonathan looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

I held his gaze.

“Then tell me.””

He smiled sadly.

“Richard was drowning before you met him.””

Richard looked away.

Jonathan continued.

“The debts. The legal problems. The old agreements.””

He pointed toward the documents.

“He needed money.””

I looked at Richard.

“You told me you were financially stable.””

Richard’s face broke.

“I thought I could fix it.””

Jonathan laughed.

“That was always Richard’s problem.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Mr. Bennett, you transferred funds from accounts without authorization.””

Jonathan shrugged.

“Technically, the accounts were accessible.””

“Accessible?””

I repeated.

“You mean stolen.””

His eyes turned cold.

“You don’t understand business.””

I stepped closer.

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“I understand betrayal.””

For the first time, Jonathan looked uncomfortable.

Because I wasn’t crying.

I wasn’t begging.

I wasn’t the woman he expected.

Daniel showed him the evidence.

“The forged signatures.””

No response.

“The shell company.””

Silence.

“The life insurance policy.””

Jonathan’s expression changed.

Richard noticed.

“You knew about that?””

Jonathan looked at his brother.

“I did what was necessary.””

Richard stepped back.

“My God.””

The words came quietly.

“You were willing to let my wife die.””

Jonathan looked away.

And that was his answer.

Chloe started crying.

“I thought this was about money.””

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her face.

“I thought everyone was just trying to solve problems.””

I looked at her.

“But they created bigger ones.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

For the first time, she didn’t defend anyone.

The officer stepped forward.

“Jonathan Bennett, you’ll need to come with us.””

Jonathan looked at me one last time.

“You think you won.””

I held his gaze.

“No.””

I looked around the ruined wedding.

“At least I know the truth now.””

He was escorted away.

The room finally became quiet.

But I knew something.

Truth didn’t erase damage.

It only showed where to begin repairing.

Richard approached me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“I know.””

His eyes filled.

“But I don’t know if that’s enough.””

I looked down at the papers.

Neither did I.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his face changed.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

He lowered the phone.

“There’s one more account.””

My heart sank.

“Whose?””

Daniel looked at me.

“This one was created after the wedding.””

Richard frowned.

“After?””

Daniel nodded.

“And the owner…”

May you like

He hesitated.

“The owner is Emily Bennett.””
