Chapter 6: The Woman They Planned to Replace
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The entire ballroom seemed frozen around that single piece of paper.
My name.
My signature.
My life insurance policy.
And Chloe as the beneficiary.
I looked at her.
She immediately started crying.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
“No, Emily. I didn’t know about that.””
Richard stared at his daughter.
“Then who did?””
Nobody answered.
The officer looked at Daniel.
“We found more records connected to the policy.””
Daniel opened the folder.
“The policy was created shortly after Emily married you, Richard.””
Richard looked sick.
“That was six years ago.””
“Yes.””
“And who submitted it?””
Daniel glanced at the document.
“An insurance broker connected to Vanessa Carter.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“That doesn’t mean anything.””
Richard looked at her.
“It means you’ve been planning this since the beginning.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
But her voice lacked confidence.
I watched her carefully.
The woman who had smiled while her daughter slapped me.
The woman who had watched me pay for everything.
The woman who had secretly tried to take my money.
She had always been there.
Waiting.
“I want to know something,” I said.
Vanessa looked at me.
“When did you decide I wasn’t family?””
She frowned.
“What?””
“When did you look at me and decide I was just something you could use?””
Her lips pressed together.
“You’re being dramatic.””
I almost smiled.
“Dramatic?””
I touched my cheek.
“The slap was dramatic.””
I lifted the papers.
“The fraud was dramatic.””
I pointed around the ballroom.
“The humiliation was dramatic.””
My voice lowered.
“But this?””
I looked at the documents.
“This was planned.””
Richard walked away from Vanessa.
Slowly.
Like he was seeing her for the first time.
“I trusted you.””
Vanessa’s expression softened.
“Richard.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t get to explain this away.””
Chloe stood up.
“Dad, please.””
Richard turned toward her.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
That hurt her.
I saw it.
But I couldn’t comfort her.
Not this time.
Daniel cleared his throat.
“There’s another reason I came today.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The wedding wasn’t just used as a distraction.””
“What do you mean?”” I asked.
He opened another folder.
“Someone planned to transfer control of several accounts today.””
My stomach tightened.
“Today?””
“Yes.””
“During the wedding?””
Daniel nodded.
“The timing was intentional.””
Richard looked at Chloe.
“You were going to do this while everyone was here?””
She covered her mouth.
“No.””
Brandon suddenly spoke.
“She didn’t understand the details.””
Everyone turned toward him.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
Not angry.
Nervous.
Richard stepped closer.
“What details?””
Brandon said nothing.
Laura answered for him.
“He was going to disappear.””
Brandon looked at his mother.
“Stop.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You told me after the transfer went through, you would leave.””
Chloe looked at him.
“What?””
Brandon froze.
“Chloe…”
“You said we were building a future.””
His silence destroyed her.
I watched her face collapse.
Not because she had lost money.
Because she finally realized she had been used too.
Richard looked at Brandon with disgust.
“You never loved my daughter.””
Brandon didn’t respond.
Because he couldn’t.
The truth was already there.
Then Chloe slowly turned toward me.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Emily.””
I looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
The entire room became quiet.
Six years.
I had waited six years to hear those words.
But now they felt different.
Too late.
I swallowed.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
She looked surprised.
“But that doesn’t fix what happened.””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I know.””
For the first time that day, she sounded honest.
Daniel closed the folder.
“There’s one final document.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He hesitated.
“It concerns Richard.””
My husband stiffened.
“Me?””
Daniel nodded.
“This was discovered in the same file.””
He handed Richard an envelope.
Richard opened it.
Then his face changed.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Richard?””
Slowly, he handed the paper to me.
I read the first line.
And my blood turned cold.
Because it wasn’t another fake account.
It wasn’t another forged signature.
It was a divorce filing.
Already prepared.
Already signed.
But the signature at the bottom wasn’t Richard’s.
May you like
It was mine.
And the filing date was tomorrow.
