Chapter 12: The Debt From the Past
Nobody spoke.
The document sat between us.
A ghost from a past I never knew existed.
Daniel picked it up first.
He read carefully.
Then looked at Richard.
“What is this?””
Richard didn’t answer.
I watched his face.
The fear.
The shame.
The regret.
All the emotions I had been trying to understand suddenly had a reason.
“Richard.””
He looked at me.
“I was going to tell you.””
I closed my eyes.
“Of course you were.””
Michael leaned against the table.
“He never does until he has no choice.””
Richard glared at him.
“You’re the last person who gets to judge me.””
Michael smiled.
“Maybe.””
He looked at me.
“But I’m the only person telling her the truth.””
I picked up the document.
The name at the top was unfamiliar.
*Thomas Bennett.*
Richard’s father.
My husband’s father.
I looked at Richard.
“What does your father have to do with this?””
Richard swallowed.
“Everything.””
He sat down.
“I never told you because I wanted to leave that life behind.””
“What life?””
He looked at the paper.
“My father was involved in financial schemes.””
I felt numb.
“And you knew?””
“I was young.””
“How young?””
“Twenty-three.””
I stared.
“And?””
Richard looked ashamed.
“I helped him.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“You helped him?””
“Not with everything.””
He shook his head.
“But enough.””
Michael interrupted.
“Richard’s father created fake companies, moved money, and hid assets.””
Richard looked at him.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Michael looked at me.
“You deserve to know.””
Richard’s voice broke.
“I made one mistake.””
I looked at him.
“One?””
He lowered his head.
“I signed documents I didn’t understand.””
Daniel looked up.
“What documents?””
Richard answered quietly.
“Guarantees.””
The room went silent.
“Guarantees for what?””
“My father’s debts.””
I understood.
Slowly.
The debt.
The old documents.
The reason everyone wanted access to my accounts.
Michael continued.
“After Thomas died, those debts didn’t disappear.””
Richard nodded.
“They followed me.””
I looked at him.
“So you married me while carrying this?””
“I thought I could fix it.””
I laughed softly.
“Everyone thinks they can fix things.””
Richard looked devastated.
“I loved you.””
I believed him.
That was the worst part.
Because love and betrayal could exist together.
“I loved you too.””
My voice cracked.
“But you still lied.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
Michael stepped closer.
“And Vanessa knew.””
Richard looked at him.
“What?””
Michael smiled.
“She found out about the debt years ago.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Her expression changed.
“She used it.””
Michael nodded.
“She realized Richard was vulnerable.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“You’re acting like I created everything.””
Michael looked at her.
“You didn’t.””
He smiled.
“But you weren’t the first person to see an opportunity.””
Everyone turned.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Michael looked at me.
“It means Vanessa and Brandon weren’t the only ones planning to use Emily.””
My heart sank.
“Who else?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked directly at Richard.
And Richard looked away.
That was when I knew.
There was another secret.
Another person.
Another betrayal.
“Richard.””
He closed his eyes.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice was shaking.
“Tell me.””
He took a deep breath.
“The person who knew about my father’s debt…”
He looked at me.
“The person who introduced me to the lawyer.””
A pause.
“The person who helped me hide everything…”
The room waited.
Then he whispered:
“It was my brother.””
I froze.
“Your brother?””
Richard nodded.
“He was the one who told Vanessa about the debt.””
Daniel looked at the records.
Then suddenly stopped.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
He stared at the screen.
“The account receiving the oldest payments.””
His face changed.
“It wasn’t Vanessa.””
My heart raced.
“Then who?””
Daniel slowly turned the laptop around.
The account holder name appeared.
And I felt the world go silent.
Because the person behind everything wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Brandon.
May you like
It was someone whose name I had written on every holiday card for six years.
*Jonathan Bennett.*
