Chapter 4: The Plan Behind My Back
The photograph trembled between my fingers.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was finally seeing the truth.
The woman who handed it to me stepped back.
“My name is Laura Hayes,” she said quietly.
Brandon’s face turned white.
“Mom?””
The entire ballroom went silent.
I looked from Laura to Brandon.
His mother.
The woman who had just exposed her own son.
Richard stared at her.
“You knew about this?””
Laura nodded.
“I found out three weeks ago.””
Brandon shook his head.
“You weren’t supposed to come here.””
Laura looked at him with disappointment.
“I wasn’t supposed to watch you destroy innocent people either.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Everyone needs to calm down.””
Nobody listened.
Not anymore.
I turned the photograph over again.
The words were still there.
*Phase two begins after Emily signs.*
I looked at Chloe.
“What was I supposed to sign?””
She looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because guilt would have made her look at me.
But she couldn’t.
Richard’s voice was low.
“Answer her.””
Chloe swallowed.
“It was just paperwork.””
“What paperwork?”” I asked.
She remained silent.
“Chloe.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“It was a financial agreement.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Financial agreement for what?””
Vanessa interrupted.
“Emily, you’re twisting this.””
I turned toward her.
“You used my name to open an account.””
Her mouth closed.
“You moved money without my permission.””
Silence.
“And now I find out you had a plan that started with me signing something.””
I looked at Chloe.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know everything.””
I almost whispered.
“But you knew enough.””
That was the hardest part.
Not the money.
Not the humiliation.
The betrayal.
Six years of birthdays.
Six years of Christmas mornings.
Six years of showing up when nobody else did.
I remembered Chloe sitting at my kitchen table at eighteen, crying because she didn’t get into her dream college.
“I’m not smart enough,” she had said.
And I had held her hand.
“You don’t need to prove anything to anyone.””
I paid her tuition because I believed in her.
Now I wondered if she ever believed in me.
Laura stepped forward.
“I need to explain something.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at Brandon.
“My son came to me months ago.””
Brandon’s jaw tightened.
“Mom, don’t.””
She ignored him.
“He told me he was marrying Chloe because her family had access to money.””
Chloe gasped.
“That’s not true.””
Laura looked at her sadly.
“I wish it wasn’t.””
Brandon stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Laura shook her head.
“I saw the messages.””
Richard’s face darkened.
“What messages?””
Laura reached into her purse.
She pulled out her phone.
“I saved them because I knew nobody would believe me.””
Brandon moved toward her.
Richard immediately stepped between them.
“Don’t.””
Laura unlocked the phone.
Then she showed it to Richard.
His expression changed as he read.
“What does it say?””
Richard handed the phone to me.
I didn’t want to look.
But I did.
The message was from Brandon.
To Vanessa.
*Once Chloe signs the transfer agreement, Emily loses control of the accounts. After that, we move the money before Richard notices.*
My hands went cold.
Another message followed.
*The wedding keeps everyone distracted.*
I closed my eyes.
The wedding.
My money.
My love.
Everything had been turned into a performance.
Chloe suddenly dropped into a chair.
“I didn’t know about the transfer.””
I looked at her.
“But you knew about the plan.””
She covered her face.
“I thought it was just temporary.””
“Temporary?””
She looked up.
“We were going to pay everything back.””
I stared at her.
“With what?””
She had no answer.
Richard looked devastated.
“My daughter.””
The words came out broken.
“How could you?””
Chloe cried.
“I was scared.””
Richard shook his head.
“You were scared, so you let people use my wife?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel, the investigator, stepped forward.
“There’s something else you need to see.””
He handed me a folder.
I opened it.
Inside were copies of emails.
Dozens of them.
Between Vanessa and Brandon.
My eyes moved across the dates.
Months before the wedding.
Months before the slap.
They had been planning this from the beginning.
But one email caught my attention.
It was from Vanessa.
*After the wedding, Emily will finally understand she was never part of this family.*
I stopped breathing.
Richard read it over my shoulder.
His face changed.
“Vanessa…”
She looked away.
And for the first time, she looked afraid.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
Because she knew something I didn’t.
There was still one piece missing.
I turned the page.
At the bottom of the email chain was a message sent only four days earlier.
The sender wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Brandon.
It was Chloe.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Richard saw her name.
“No.””
Chloe started crying.
“Dad…”
I looked at her.
“Why did you send this?””
She opened her mouth.
But before she answered, Daniel picked up another document.
“This might explain why.””
He placed it on the table.
A loan agreement.
With Chloe’s signature.

And the amount written across the top made everyone stop.
