Chapter 3: The Secret Account
The folder landed on the table with a quiet sound.
But somehow, it felt louder than the slap.
The man in the suit introduced himself.
“Daniel Brooks. I’m a financial investigator.””
Nobody spoke.
Richard looked at me.
“Emily?””
I shook my head.
“I didn’t call him.””
Daniel nodded.
“She didn’t.””
Every eye turned toward him.
“Then why are you here?”” Richard asked.
Daniel opened the folder.
“Because someone attempted to move a large amount of money using Mrs. Bennett’s identity.””
Vanessa immediately stepped backward.
Only an inch.
But everyone noticed.
Richard noticed too.
“What amount?””
Daniel looked down.
“One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””
The room went silent.
Again.
It seemed like my entire marriage had become a series of silent rooms.
Daniel continued.
“The transfer was flagged because the authorization documents contained inconsistencies.””
He looked at me.
“Mrs. Bennett, did you recently approve a transfer to an account connected to Vanessa Carter?””
“No.””
“Did you sign any documents approving that payment?””
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s what we expected.””
Chloe started shaking her head.
“This is impossible.””
I looked at her.
“Is it?””
She wiped her tears.
“I didn’t know Mom was doing this.””
Richard turned toward her.
“But you knew something.””
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Richard’s face broke.
“Chloe.””
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She looked at me.
And for a moment, I saw the little girl I had known years ago.
The girl who used to run into the kitchen and ask me for help with homework.
The girl who cried when she got her first heartbreak.
The girl I thought loved me.
“I thought Brandon could fix everything.””
Richard stared.
“Fix what?””
Brandon finally spoke.
“We had financial problems.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So you stole from me?””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice surprised even me.
“You did.””
Brandon looked away.
Daniel flipped through the papers.
“There’s more.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“What else?””
Daniel removed another document.
“A second account.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
I saw it.
She knew.
“What account?”” Richard asked.
Daniel looked at the page.
“An account opened six months ago.””
He paused.
“Under a business name.””
“What business?””
Daniel turned the document around.
The name was printed clearly.
Bennett Family Events LLC.
My breath caught.
“That’s my name.””
Richard looked at me.
“You never opened that.””
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
The room erupted.
Guests whispered louder.
Phones came out again.
This time, nobody cared.
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Emily, this is getting out of control.””
I looked at her.
“You think?””
She lowered her voice.
“Can we talk privately?””
“No.””
My answer was immediate.
Her eyes narrowed.
“Emily.””
“No more private conversations.””
I looked around the ballroom.
“You wanted everyone here.””
I pointed toward the guests.
“So everyone gets to hear the truth.””
Richard stood beside me.
For the first time all day, I didn’t feel alone.
“Tell me everything,” he said.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Richard, don’t let her manipulate you.””
He stared at her.
“My wife paid for my daughter’s wedding.””
His voice cracked.
“My daughter humiliated her.””
Then he looked at Chloe.
“And my daughter knew something was wrong.””
Chloe started crying harder.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen.””
Richard shook his head.
“That’s what people say when they get caught.””
The words hit her.
I saw it.
The moment she realized her father was no longer protecting her.
Daniel cleared his throat.
“There’s one more thing.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pulled out a final paper.
“This document was filed yesterday.””
I frowned.
“Filed by who?””
Daniel looked at Chloe.
She went completely still.
“Chloe Bennett.””
My heart stopped.
“What did she file?””
Daniel hesitated.
“A request for access to shared family assets.””
Richard looked confused.
“Why?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Because she believed Mrs. Bennett would soon become unavailable to make financial decisions.””
The room froze.
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
“It means someone expected you to leave.””
Richard stared at his daughter.
“Leave?””
Chloe’s face went pale.
“Dad…”
But before she could finish, the ballroom doors opened.
A woman walked in carrying a small envelope.
She looked directly at me.
“Emily Bennett?””
I stepped forward.
“Yes?””
She handed me the envelope.
“I was told you needed this before the wedding ended.””
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Chloe, Brandon, and Vanessa sitting together.
Taken two weeks earlier.
They were not planning a wedding.
They were planning something else.
May you like
And written on the back of the photo were six words that made my hands shake.
*“Phase two begins after Emily signs.””*
