Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Family Name
I read the sentence again.
Over and over.
*The biggest mistake I ever made was trusting you.*
The words felt impossible.
Because no matter how difficult my relationship with my father had been, there was one thing I knew.
He trusted me.
At least, I thought he did.
I looked at Ethan.
“What did he mean?””
Ethan shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
“Then why bring me this?””
“Because I found another message.””
My patience broke.
“Another one?””
Ethan nodded.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a flash drive.
“This was hidden in Dad’s office.””
Detective Reed immediately took it.
“Where?””
“In the bottom of his desk.””
“Why didn’t you turn this over?””
Ethan looked away.
“Because I was afraid of what was on it.””
The detective connected it to the laptop.
Everyone gathered around.
A video appeared.
My father again.
But this time, he looked different.
Not angry.
Not controlling.
Afraid.
“Daniel,” he said.
My chest tightened.
“I don’t have much time.””
The video shook slightly, like he was recording quickly.
“I made mistakes.””
He looked down.
“Especially with you.””
I swallowed.
“I spent my life trying to build something that would protect our family.””
A pause.
“But I created something that destroyed it.””
The screen flickered.
Then my father said something that made Claire grab my hand.
“Your mother was right about me.””
I froze.
My mother had died when I was a teenager.
“What does she have to do with this?””
The video continued.
“I should have told Daniel the truth years ago.””
My father looked directly into the camera.
“He deserves to know who he really is.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Detective Reed.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Claire squeezed my hand.
“Daniel…”
I stood.
“No.””
I walked away.
“No more secrets.””
I turned toward Ethan.
“What truth?””
Ethan looked miserable.
“I don’t know.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because Dad kept everything hidden.””
I walked upstairs.
I needed air.
I needed space.
But when I entered Lily’s room, I stopped.
On the floor beside her bookshelf was a small wooden box.
I had never seen it before.
My heart started racing.
I opened it.
Inside were old papers.
Photographs.
And a hospital bracelet.
A baby hospital bracelet.
The name on it made me freeze.
*Daniel Carter Jr.*
I stared.
That was my name.
Then I saw the date.
The date I was born.
Underneath it was another document.
A birth record.
And another name.
The name of my biological father.
Not the man who raised me.
Someone else.
I couldn’t move.
A floorboard creaked behind me.
I turned.
Claire stood in the doorway.
Her face told me everything.
She knew.
“You knew.””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I found out before I disappeared.””
My voice became quiet.
“Who is he?””
She looked down.
“Daniel…”
“Who is my father?””
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“The man your father spent his entire life trying to destroy.””
I felt the room spin.
“Who?””
Claire looked toward the stairs.
Toward the hidden rooms.
Toward all the secrets buried beneath our home.

Then she said:
“Vanessa’s father.””
