The Wall That Hid My Wife / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Child Who Remembered

I didn’t speak.

I couldn’t.

The drawing shook between my fingers.

Lily looked up at me.

“Daddy?””

I forced myself to breathe.

“Sweetheart, where did you get this?””

She pointed upstairs.

“Behind my bookshelf.””

Claire rushed over.

“Lily, why didn’t you tell me?””

The little girl looked confused.

“Because Mommy told me not to.””

Claire froze.

“What?””

Lily looked at her mother.

“You told me when we were playing hide-and-seek.””

The room went silent.

Claire slowly knelt down.

“Baby, when did I tell you that?””

“Before you went away.””

My heart stopped.

Before she disappeared.

Claire looked at me.

“I don’t remember that.””

Lily hugged the drawing.

“You said if anything happened, I should keep the picture safe.””

Detective Reed entered the room.

“What’s going on?””

Nobody answered.

Because we were all thinking the same thing.

If Claire had prepared Lily before disappearing…

She knew something was coming.

“Lily,” Claire said gently, “did I say anything else?””

The little girl thought.

Then nodded.

“You said Grandpa was angry.””

I felt the room tilt.

“My father?””

Lily nodded.

“He said our family was going to change.””

Claire covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

“You remember?””

She shook her head slowly.

“No.””

“Claire.””

“I remember pieces.””

She stood.

“Not everything.””

Detective Reed stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, this is important.””

Claire pressed her hands against her forehead.

“I remember arguing with someone.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Your father.””

The words landed like a blow.

“He was alive when you disappeared.””

She nodded.

“But he was already supposed to be dead.””

Vanessa whispered.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“I think you need to see something.””

She walked toward the hallway.

Everyone followed.

She stopped beside a framed photograph hanging near the staircase.

A family photo from years ago.

My father.

Me.

Claire.

And Lily as a toddler.

Vanessa reached behind the frame.

She pulled something out.

A small key.

“I found this after Claire disappeared.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know what it opened.””

Detective Reed took it.

“This is old.””

Claire looked at the key.

Then suddenly grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Her face had gone pale.

“I’ve seen this before.””

“Where?””

She looked toward the storage room.

“In the hidden room.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“There was a second door.””

We all rushed back.

The officers had already searched the hidden room, but Claire moved directly toward the back wall.

“There.””

She pointed.

Behind the old shelves.

A narrow outline was visible.

Another door.

Another secret.

I looked at Vanessa.

“How many secrets does this house have?””

She didn’t answer.

Detective Reed inserted the key.

It fit.

The lock clicked.

Everyone stepped back.

The door opened slowly.

Inside was not another room.

It was a hallway.

A long, narrow passage beneath the house.

The walls were covered with photographs.

Not old ones.

New ones.

Photos of us.

Claire.

Me.

Lily.

Taken recently.

Someone had been watching.

Still.

Detective Reed lifted his flashlight.

“Stay back.””

At the end of the hallway was a desk.

On the desk was a laptop.

Still turned on.

And beside it was a cup of coffee.

Still warm.

Someone had been there moments ago.

I walked closer despite Reed telling me not to.

The laptop screen showed a folder.

A single folder.

My name was on it.

*DANIEL CARTER.*

I clicked it.

Inside were videos.

Hundreds of them.

The first one was dated yesterday.

I pressed play.

The screen showed our storage room.

It showed me breaking through the wall.

It showed Claire stepping out.

And then the camera angle changed.

The person recording was standing behind us.

Watching.

Waiting.

The video ended.

A new message appeared on the screen.

*You finally found the room.*

A second line appeared.

*Now find the man who built it.*

Then the laptop speakers crackled.

A voice filled the hallway.

A voice I hadn’t heard in three years.

My father’s voice.

“Daniel, if you’re hearing this…”

May you like

The screen went black.

“…it means I’m already dead.””
